    To comment, that is just crazy, I really have to wonder how that left the mint.

    That's crazy! What if that had managed to get into circulation? Someone would get a pretty big surprise if they got that back in change.

    Finally.. an error coin posted on CT that doesn't require a 20X loupe to see.

    Well they got ripped off with that roll. The article says it weighs 105 grams which works out to about 33 cents. So they only got 18 cents worth of coins for their 50 cents.:rollling:

    I counted the rings like a tree and came up with 28 coins

    Think of a coin that sticks to the upper die... and as more blanks are fed in, they start building up around the die, finally breaking off which results in the weird shape you see above. Here's another example:

    These errors MUST be smuggled out of the mint, how else could they ever get out/

    That was the era of coin smuggling at the US mint.

    I hope they don't smuggle them out of the mint the same way drug smugglers bring stuff into the country.
