WOW, Nice QC there US Mint 2012-S proof ASE set *rolls eyes*

If this one made it through the mint's QC process and passed I wonder what is rejected?! Notice anything distracting around the 3:00 position near the "Y" in LIBERTY? You dont need 20/20 vision to see the nasty spot there. Is there any way I could get compensation from the mint for the shipping charges I am about to incur sending this thing back for a replacement?

    dsmith23 Gotta get 'em all

Not every coin they send out is gonna be a 70. I doubt that you'll get shipping paid by them for its return.

I think it's a good thing the spot is on the proof and not the reverse proof. That would have really irritated me.

I understand that 70's are rare, but that spot is pretty large. Its probably 1/2 the size of a grain of rice for goodness sakes!

When did the Mint start putting ASEs in the proof sets?

Seriously though, you would be better off contacting the Mint's customer service and asking about reimbursement for shipping the coin back to them for a refund.

Its the San Fransisco proof and reverse proof coins. I guess its a "set"?

I know, was just busting your horns a bit :thumb:

Usually when you say proof set, people think you mean this:

    2012-Proof-Set.jpg

and not the anniversary ASE set.

While this is true, PR69DCAM's would certainly be appreciated and with the lots that I received, that might be tough.

UPDATE: I went to the mint's website and saw that their customer service hotline is open 7 days a week so I gave them a call. The woman was very friendly and asked that I fill out the return paperwork enclosed with my order and send the coin back insured. She also said to mail a reciept of the shipping bill to them separately and that I will most likely able to get a credit to my account as a reimbursement for the shipping charges. She then said that from there the coin will possibly be reviewed.

This is an interesting scenario being that this set was "made to order". Am I going to recieve someone elses returns or cancellation? Will this coin be put back into the pool and someone else recieve it? Theoretically there could be a "return pool" where all returns just keep getting shipped back to different people as exchanges because no more of these will be minted.

Im hoping for the best. Either way... I have another set that is scheduled to ship in October.

I'm guessing that since this is the regular coin and not the reverse proof. They will just send a regular ASE as replacement.

    Wow!

Then he'd have an "official" US Mint 75th Anniversary Error Set where they put in a 2012-W Proof instead of the 2012-S Proof!

    Good Luck!

Oh, I meant to say the non-proof version.

  16. I opened my set last night. Both are spotless. My RP has some serious machine doubling on the reverse, including the mint mark, designers initials, a few stars and some of the lettering. I considered returning it, but thought it would be a waste of time since I am just going to keep the set for my collection. Plus, I will always be able to recognize it as mine with all the strike doubling. TC

More likely than not, you'll receive another proof ASE that was returned, but in the Mint's opinion is a better looking coin than the one you returned.

They certainly would not strike another proof just for you, and possibly wouldn't be able to since they're no longer striking the San Francisco ASEs.

Then it would be a packaging error and they have no premium. He could do this now, on his own, if that's what he wants.

Can anybody conjure up an idea as to why the Mint is dropping the ball on the quality control of these coins? It seems as though the 2011 set was better in general.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression the Mint uses an third party vendor who packages the sets.
