The 3 that come to mind are Flowing Hair's, Seated Libertys, and Draped Bust..

But.. I haven't seen much action on Peace dollars or Walker halves lately. What do you think?

What series is the most active?

I don't believe in the concept of a sleeper series if it is defined as a series that is relatively dormant and that has fundamental reasons (aside from bullion) to appreciate at a greater clip than other series in the future. The reason many of these series are considered "sleeper" is that they have had, and continue to have, a difficult time retaining popularity. Of those listed above, I see nothing sleeper about FH, Seated or DB coinage; they have always had strong demand and sell well.

Most active is always pretty much either Morgans or Lincolns.

As for a sleeper series - don't really think there is such a thing anymore. If they are asleep, there's a reason for it. And they aint likely to wake up.

sleeper- Spouses. With the mintages coming in below 5K it will not take very much demand to wake these up

I see three problems with the Spouse series in this list. The first is that if gold stays near its current level then each coin will be at least $800 or so to obtain and there isn't a deep pool of folks who want to spend that much per coin as a baseline entry into a series. The second problem is that by the end of the series there will be 80 or so coins, if one collects both MS and PR issues, which leads to an investment of over $100,000 just in bullion. The last potential issue is that there may be so many coins in the near or sub 5,000 mintage range that it will be tough to find true key dates. However, if gold crashes in price then there may be a huge influx of folks into the series and it could do extraordinarily well.

I think the classic styled spouse obverses have potential (e.g. Jefferson).

  11. The APEs (American Platinum Eagles) are sound asleep. Many have great designs, low mintages, and can be purchased right now for less than issue price since platinum spot has fallen below gold. TC

Most active: I went to a show on Saturday, and the dealers were having no trouble selling classic commemoratives and Morgans.

SBA's, Presidential dollars, and State Quarters are all sleepers. They will never wake up though.

Hmmm...along that train of thought, clad proof sets certainly seem asleep. Again, not sure they'll wake up.

Low mintages are not an absolute for collector demand. There's gotta be something else and at 1/2 of gold in each coin, the average collector is automatically disqualified from working this set.

From my point if view, I think the Eisenhower is a true sleeper. Come to think of it, it's been sleeping since 1971.

Isn't that the same as "dead"?

Eisenhowers are the sleepers that will slowly awaken like a giant.

Morgans, Mercury, Lincolns & Frankie's are the most active

Seriously for Active , Morgans and Lincolns . But Bust halves seem to be really growing (including Draped Bust halves too ) Also early Commems are rising . 2 coins that seem to always hold their value are MS Flying Eagle cents , and 1859 Indian cents , reason always needed for Type sets . Just about anything the mint puts out today is dead , buy because you like them not as an investment , of course there will always be some Jackie Robinsons and Anniversary sets ( not the 2012 open mintage ones . )
