Hi to all the members in this forum once again and hope everyone is fine over here, miss all of you very much because I have not yet been logging here for such a long time aready.I want to show everyone a Malaysia freak coin that was discovered by me recently from my personal collection. Here is a piece of Malaysia 1977 Parlimen house 20 sen coin and the coin has a huge piece of metal raised on the rim at the bottom centre part on reverse side,it is not a rim bumps but extra metal raised on the rim because the side is still in perfect condition at the bottom centre part on reverse side of this coin after I have seen it over and over again as guarantee by me.Unfortunely,I not sure what happened to this coin and probably it is not an error coin because I cannot find any type of error coin looks exactly like this in the 18 recognised common error coins list on a website.I really have no idea what caused this to happen and I think that this coin is completely a freak coin if it is something cannot be explained and not considered as an error coin, this is just of what I thought but I cannot confirm about it because I am not a coin expert. That is why I need the coin experts over here to help me to identify if this is a freak coin or not and tell me what happened to this coin during the processing period. Please give me your personal opinions and explainations in detail to me then I will be satisfied to understand everything. I believe old Malaysia freak coin is very uncommonly seen and not intentionally make freak coin if it is a freak coin confirm by someone else later on,this is just my personal opinion but I still need someone else to confirm about it.Please help me to identify if this considered as a freak coin or not and your help is very much apprieiciated by me as usual and I will get back to you as soon as possible after your reply to me,hope to hear from you very soon. Please refer to the scans below and see carefully especially the raised part on the rim.Thank you.
This is what is called a rim cud. Imagine you are 2 mm tall and you are standing on the field of the die. Around you are "holes in the filed that create the letters when the coins are struck. Now let's walk over to the edge of the die and look over the edge. A short drop down is another flat ledge that runs around the die. That ledge is what creates the flat top surface of the rim. Now if a piece of that ledge breaks off when you strike the coin there will be a raised lump of metal or "cud" that is only on the rim. A rim cud. That is what has happened to your coin, a piece of that ledge has broken away.
Can we see a pic of the edge of the coin where that metal is? and as for a list of errors, I'd use http://conecaonline.org/content/glossary.html since it lists alot more than 18.
Yes,you are certainly right about it is a rim cud raised on the rim at the bottom centre part on reverse side of this coin because someone said the same thing just like you did on the other coin forum there, just want to get the answer as soon as possible and your information is very helpful to me.I thought it was a freak coin because I have never seen anything like this before and I have just realized that it is a rim cud happened on this coin,a little bit disappionted right now. I have another question here if this coin with rim cud considered as an error coin or just variety only?Does it brings any special value to my coin and also common or rare thing happened on Malaysia coins?Hopefully you can answer my questions here and hope to hear from you once again.I really apprieiciate your help and informations above there very much,my knowleadge is getting more now.Thank you.
Sorry to tell you that I do not have the picture of the edge of the coin with me currently because I did not take it after I sealed it up with the coin paper.I can tell you the metal is just right on the rim but not over the rim and touched the edge of the coin at the bottom centre part on reverse side of the coin as I have seen it over and over again for sure.May I know if this rim cud considered as an error because I do not find it in the 18 recognised common error coins list on the other website and probably you are right about the error coin types have more than 18 types of error coin after click the link of the website above there. Lastly I would like to apprieiciate you so much for providing the link of the website and I have learned alot about the error coins.Thank you.
It's in a 2x2 holder, just pop out the staples, take a pic, then restaple it. If there is a ding on the edge, it may be displaced metal and not be an error, just post mint damage(PMD).
Technically it isn't either one, it is what would be called a die stage, just another step in the life of the die from new until it is retired. It isn't a variety because it does not appear on every coin struck from that die, only those struck after the die broke. It isn't an error because a true error is typically a "one of" with each one being unique. Most people though WOULD call it an error. However it would be considered to be very minor and would not add significant value to the coin. But it does make for a nice curiousity.
There is no ding at all on the edge and the edge of the bottom centre is in perfect condition after I have seen it over and over again for too many times aready, confirm it is not a post mint damage.I will post a picture of the edge at the bottom centre of this coin on tomorrow and everything will be cleared to you.You are welcome to comment it.Thank you.
It seems everything is clear to me right now and I still feel happy to have it even you dont considered it as an error coin but the extra metal looks so obvious and placed on the bottom centre in a beautiful way.Maybe you are right about the value is not much add to this coin because it is not really a major error but I do have a few major error coins from Malaysia and I am going to show you with a new topics very soon.Anothing thing is someone would consider this is an error coin on the other coin forum there. Please check it out on my other error coins and let me know what you think of it.Thank you.
Here is a picture of the edge and the edge is in perfect condition. Please refer to the scan below.Thank you.
