I work as a cashier and usually only average a wheat cent a week or so, but today I found my first silver. A 1952 Washington quarter. I put it in my hand to give as change to a customer when I heard it make a funny sound so I quickly threw it back in the register and gave him another one. I try to look through the change as much as I can but it gets hard with customers and managers all around. Anyone else ever find anything cool in a cash register?

Nice! I'm not a cashier, so no such luck. Not even a wheat cent sent last August:eek:

Hey, fun stuff. When I was a young kid we would sometimes go out to eat supper in one of our local restaurants in a town of 2,000-3,000. I was allowed to go back to the cash register and go through all the change! Heaven! The most memorable time (this was in the 50's) was when I found a 1916 Merc and turned it over and saw a mint mark. I thought I was going to throw up until I looked closely and saw the small s. Have fun.

    Nice find!

My first silver find was a 90% silver Kennedy half that was dropped in my tip cup when I was a teen. I have also worked as a cashier back when I was in high school, but I never found anything interesting. :(

I had a friend that recently received a silver quarter in change. The cashier handed him his change and heard the "tink" of silver and proceeded to grab it back out of his hand. She said they've been having a problem with counterfeit coins and that it was probably a counterfeit coin. He told her he knew what it was and that since she had already given it to him, he'd like it back. I don't know if she genuinely thought it was counterfeit and was trying to protect him, or if she knew it was silver and wanted it for herself. Either way, awkward situation...

By far the most memorable was finding a 33-D walker in one of the registers.

Couple more finds today. I don't bother posting the wheat cents I find but I'll include them in this post. Found a 51 and a 55 wheat cent early in the day and was pretty happy with that. Later, I saw a shiny Lincoln head and figured it was one of those new Lincoln shield pennies that I see dozens of everyday, but when I flipped it over I saw a Memorial reverse and looked at the date, a 1971 S. This is my first proof find in circulation. These 3 pennies alone would've made my day but a few customers later I found another proof, this time a 1985. Both probably came out of the same roll. I'm a happy camper.

I was a cashier for 3 months at target. I did not find any silvers. Maybe 5 wheat cents. Good find and good luck on finding more! Silver is very hard to find today.

I used to work at a gas station many years ago.

A customer came in with a 1957 $100 bill. It was crispy.

Sadly, I did not hang onto it.

I got some silvers too...mostly dimes.

    Nice find on the proofs.
I worked as a cashier for a long time in high school/college (pizza place, then movie theater). I found a few things here and there, nothing too amazing. I did find my first steelie from circulation in the "take a penny leave a penny" tray. And I've found a few silver dimes, some war nicks, the occasional older bill. Of course wheats. And I think I got 2 silver Canadian quarters once, too.

EDIT: Figured I'd add this story, it kind of fits here. I was at the gas station a year or so ago, and I saw a silver dime sitting in a pile with some other change. The customer had run out to his car to dig for more change so he could buy a mountain dew or something. So I told the guy at the register I'd give him a quarter for it. He asked why, and I said it's silver, I collect them. He said I'll just trade it to you for a dime. So I got it at face, but I think he initially thought I was trying to pull a fast one, some sleight of hand or something.

Nice finds! I love having a till to go through. I've been averaging at least one silver coin per week. There have been nice collectible coins, too. Pre-1950 nickels and pennies. Don't forget to check banknotes as well. It's always a thrill to pull a note worth $400 and up and get it for face value! ( I talk from experience:D).

If you go on You Tube under "Coin find's from Wendy's", there is a whole series of videos posted by an enthusiastic young fellow who works as a cashier at a Wendy's in Maryland. He apparently has found most of the coins posted in the cash registers at work.

Years ago one of my cashiers broke open a roll of cents. They were all steel cents. I checked all the registers and found the same thing. End results, we received about 10 rolls in our daily change order. I let the cashiers divide them up. All the cashiers were too young to know what they were. It was a fun day.

Oh man, I can't even begin to recount the stuff I've gotten while managing/cashiering at the store the past four years.

Up to 5 rolls of wheats I think and working on another one. Don't have them here at the house but 25+ silver quarters, 20+ halves, a bunch of dimes including a solid roll pre-65 Rosies, war nickels, a couple buffalos, and Indian head, and even a dateless SLQ. Carried it as a pocket piece for a long time but it disappeared. :/ Had a lady paid one of the other cashiers with a Silver Eagle once, cashier took it as a dollar since she didn't know what it was. Several WAM's and hundreds of other coins I've held on to.

    Today's Finds

Got a total of 6 two dollar bills and a 1955 wheat cent. I got one of the two dollar bills when a customers total came out to $4.14 and he handed me 3 one dollar bills and one two dollar bill mixed in. He started digging around for the $.14 when I quickly gave him change out of a five. He's happy because he thinks he cheated me out of a dollar and I'm happy cause I got the two dollar bill. Then about an hour later another customer gave me 5 more of the two dollar bills.

A couple of years ago, I was buying something from our cafeteria at work and noticed that I received a silver quarter in my change. I asked the guy working the register if there were any more in there...there were 12 more!

I posted a message about this, but I cannot seem to find it.
