Newbe question: Clean w/soap and water prior to putting in Cowens Cardboard/Mylar Coin Flip? I have four part silver coins to put into Cowens Cardboard/Mylar Coin Flips.
Soap and water are usually not a good idea. Both can contain chlorides, which can be damaging to your coins. Rule of thumb, until you know EXACTLY what you are doing, never clean coins. Please, just trust us. I ruined a ton of coins starting out as a kid. Read threads here and you can find out how to properly clean coins, but the most important part is to know WHEN and WHY and HOW to do it properly. By asking this question, we simply know you do not know WHEN, WHY, or HOW. So please don't. Just put them in the way they are for now. Chris
Clean with soap and hot tap water first, then wipe off with a rough paper towel. Especially do this with your MS and proof coins. It'll make them last a lot longer. Just kidding. Don't do anything like that. Please.
I think this kid is genuine and super green. Please don't confuse him or make him do something he'll regret later. Remember, he's not Detecto.
I agree... These kind of asinine comments have become pretty rampant around here. There is a fine line between just joking around and being a jerk. I guess you guys forget what it was like to be a newbie...
NEVER clean coins....however, I do recommend a quick rinse with a high quality acetone prior to storage. This will remove any fresh (unseen) fingerprints and completely dehydrate the surfaces. Acetone will not harm coins.
99% of the time I would agree. However, lack of knowledge of how to properly use acetone often does result in harm to the coins. So unless you know what you are doing - don't do anything.
I never, never, never clean or dip coins. My feeling is that one should either like them as they are, or don't buy the coin that one thinks is unattractive. If I have a coin that I find unattractively toned, I sell it, and have had no problems getting rid of ones that I haven't liked, as one man's meat is another's poison. Dipping has never been my thing, and I like a coin to be untouched, at least by me. What has been done before is beyond my control, but I don't want to detract from the originality, to the degree that it is original.
