Does anyone else hate proof sets?

Maybe it's just me, but I hate proof sets.

I like proof coins, don't get me wrong, but I hate seeing them entombed in plastic.

To each his own I guess. I like them. But I do like holding my coins. I have seen some really cool old proof sets all toned up.

I happen to hate horrible photoshopping of coins. Like when someone blows the colors out so bad it feels like a migraine when looking at it. But to each his own hehe.

I honestly agree and disagree with you if that makes any sense. I love a Raw coin as much as the next guy, but in the same sense I appreciate the "untouchable" aspect of the Proof sets.

I do. Ok, hate it such a strong word but yes there is something about proof sets that does bug me. It just feels almost like a gimmick. Made only as selling tool to those visiting the mint. I guess it's modern coinage, it's just made so much. You don't see proof set pre ww2, we werent a "commercial society". There is just something about raw old coinage and their potential history and people holding them that intrigue me. The proof sets are pretty but being set in plastic straight from the mint and then sold just seems gimmicky and makes me feel funny.

That post doesn't indicate he likes the plastic around them though.

Like Heidi Klum says "One day you're in and the next day you're out"

Besides I would imagine it could be near impossible to start as many threads as some do if you are consistent in your opinion.

I love sets. I enjoy flipping through a Heritage Auction catalog of 1930s to 1950s proof sets.

The picture of the quarters is telling... often I see individual proof coins being sold for more than their respective value, and I think, "Why should I spend $7 for that one coin, when I can get all 5 for $30?"

I also like making sets...as in, when I find a good deal on 1964 proofs, then I put them all in a Whitman holder. I have even assembled a set of ugly toned (tarnished?) ones. So, diff'rent strokes!

I think you've made your point. ;) Longest hyphen I've ever seen.

(Although, this thread and others like it don't appear wide-bodied on my screen.)

Chocolate is fine, but "chocolate" ice cream is not. :p And while I do not really love proof sets, I may buy a proof coin if I like the theme or design and there is no BU version ... By the way, all posts in this topic stay within the usual message "space" for me. Some browser issue maybe.
