I am thinking of starting to collect 100-coin bags of the "s" mint mark ms quarters (these http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=16744&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=45003 http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=16742&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=45003). I am looking for any feedback on the potential of such a collection. Once the novelty wears off these may start coming in with low mintages and they are not available in circulation- not even in the mint sets! Any thoughts? any discussion of s mint mark ms quarters welcome
So just so I have the facts right, these are non-proof S mint coins? Looks to be a great bargain. Have you bought the first release?
yep- non-proof s coins...not yet- I tend to wait until there are several things I want and order all at once - this lowers shipping
Not a lot of interest in these yet. I also heard many are unsatisfied with condition...lots of bag marks. Buying the bags may be a good idea. You could cherry pick the coins that might grade MS66+ and sell the rest for 2-4x face. TC
I'm buying 1 bag and 2 rolls of each; I take one roll out of the white box and keep them in the Mint's blue quarter box. I also get a bag of Ps and Ds and I've noticed that the coins I leave in the bags seem to tone rapidly. That could be a good thing but I set asside a tube of some higher grade examples for when/if Intercept Shield albums come out for the ATB. Personally, I draw the line between collecting and hoarding at rolls; not that there's anything wrong with that! Some people have complained about the lack of "s" quarters for the 10's and 11's. I accept that every series is going to have some anomilies; the completest in me has noticed that 2010 will need two extra holes for the only year that Satin Finish uncs were made.
The mint is shipping my bag of el yunque s quarters. I am waiting to see the quality. Might leave a couple in the bag to see if or how they tone.
I had bags of the 2010's that I recently opened to put into books/folders. They all had toned to a deep pink/gold champagne color. Because of the color, I put some of them right into air-tite tubes.
I have 40 rolls of the S non proof quarters. Who knows if it's a good investment or not but at 2x face what's the risk?
I did not know that the bags caused toning, I have some nickels and quarters in those bags. Maybe I will break one open to see if anything happened! Does anyone know if the nickels have been toning?
The Mint may do a set at years end like they did in 2007+2008 But with S minted Coins? You may want to look around Nov-Dec of this year at the US Mint web site then. This set was offered at years end 2007+2008.
http://www.numismaticnews.net/article/mint-stats-buyers-barely-move-numbers mintages as of 7-19 2012 2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarter 100-Coin Bag, San Francisco rolls- 10,665 100 coin bag-6917 2012 Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter 100-Coin Bag, San Francisco rolls- 3413 bag-3589 the ElQ came out first (http://www.numismaticnews.net/article/mint-stats-end-of-june-brings-new-coins )- in their first week they sold rolls- 5800 bags- 3827..... that indicates that the interest in the first coin in this weird series had a lot of interest and then the interest fell off for the next one. I think that this will be a trend- the mintages will continue to decline

They are doing the producing the uncirculated dollar set again this year after a 4 year hiatus (September 6, 2012). TC
It is going to have the extra 2012 Reverse Proof ASEs in the middle surrounded by the S quarters. TC
did anyone notice that the Acadia is tough in high unc grades- look at what they are asking http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-S-Acad...14?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item25753025be
Wow, MS68 went for quite a bit more, only one I saw in that grade (NGC): http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-S-Acad...05?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2574673001 Although, most of the NGC 67's went in the $20-30 range. Either way, if they're found in decent grades, they look like they'll fetch a good price. Might be worth a couple bags to see if you get lucky.
Question - would rolls be a better choice for "quality"? I'm new to mint bags, but something inside my head says the coins in the rolls might fare better than the bags, since I would think the coins in the bags can rub around with each other in transit and general movement. thoughts?
I am doing pcgs ms67's so this is a bit frustrating for me- up until now I have picked them up for <$50. Also the NGC ms67's are like the pcgs ms65's on this series so far. NGC are putting a 67 on anything with these.
