Hello All, My Dad was recently given a portion of his uncle's coin collection. My Dad, brother, and I have been going over some of the coins to catalog and admire them (a little family bonding). As amateur but enthusiastic numismatists, we are obviously curious about the value of some of these coins, but have limited knowledge and poor local support. Any help would be appreciated. I can tell everyone that these coins have been stored in a hard plastic display case for the past 60+ years, but were obviously exposed to some wear and tear before that. I cannot say with any certainty that they haven't been washed or rubbed down at any time as no one in the family is quiet sure as to how they were treated before being placed behind plastic all those years ago. Our plan is to have any promising coins graded, but were hoping that members of the forum could give us a little direction as to what coins would be valuable enough to have graded. I will continue to post pics, as my little brother has sent me a great deal of pics from ones that we agreed could be more valuable.
Get your hands on a Redbook somehow, and check dates and mint marks. Figure most of what you have are common Morgan dollars not worth a lot more than silver metal value. But you never know. Some collectors also care about the pair of dies used to strike coins. Varieties. And might pay a bit more. But learning about that comes well after you understand fundamentals. Don't go there now. Rely on the Redbook to show you what's scarce and valuable. Lance.
I should explain: 55 is the number grade on the Sheldon scale (1-70) used to identify condition. (70 is perfect). Here's one like your 91O that sold: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...%2BpqsgvzsSSl4lwGN8v8%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc Here's one like your 91: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...%2BpqsgvzsSSl4lwGN8v8%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc As you can see, they both sold for less than it would cost to send them off for grading. Let's see some more
Welcome to the neighborhood! Your photos are too small, and they won't enlarge when I click on them. Chris Oops! I should have read beyond your opening post, first. They look to have been cleaned as others have said and are probably only worth melt value. Chris
First try a strong magnit on all the coins to see if they are real or fakes. This will eliminate some of the fakes if you have any. Than I would send the better coins to PCGS for grading such as the 93-s and the CC's. These coins even cleaned have a value way over silver melt. Jim
92- I believe is cleaned, somewhere around AU50 92O- if that even shine tells me anything, it is that it's cleaned. But it is also a VAM of some kind. The crack running along the top edge of UNITED will ID it but someone else will have to chime in on VAM's. I don't have a book for them yet
