COIN.jpg Sorry the quality is not great, but this is a 1981 Jefferson nickel and there is this defect on the face. There are also odd lines in the hair portion. Any ideas?

    Thank you.

    Welcome to CT

Better pictures would definitely help as would a picture of the reverse, but my first take would be a partially capped die. Without better pictures, that would be a guess at best.

I agree, it does not look like PMD to but an actual error. We would need better pictures though.

    More pictures.

The back looks completely normal, which is why I did not include a picture of it.

Thank you for responding so quickly.

Looks like the coin was struck by a capped die and a possible brockage on the portion from Jefferson's ear and to the left.

But you did not upload the better photos to this thread; you started a new thread. That will cause confusion.

I was hoping it would generate new interest and couldn't figure out how to delete this thread.

    I agree.... capped die.

The coin was struck through a late-stage die cap and also indented by an intrusive planchet that insinuated itself between the die cap and the planchet represented by this coin.
