I just saw that auction as it was ending and thought to myself "That's going fairly cheap. Somebody's losing in their sleep"

    Nice pickup.

I was really surprised after hearing these were going for upwards of $250-300... Guess that's what happens when you end your auction this late at night!

Been a great coin week! First the 1997 Matte Proof Jefferson, now this! I suppose I should look for a 1994 Matte Proof Jefferson next...lol

I bid on alot of these. At one point a seller had eight (8) I think with BIN for 150.00 I should have bought then, but I didnt really have the money. I am still hoping to get a SP69 for < 150.00. I bid on a few examples every single week month after month. One day....

Nice buy, hope you like it. I'm jealous. Get us some nice pics when it shows up.

About the best they are going for is $160, and that is a great deal. I have not seen them for less, and will snap up one soon!

Nice pick-up! You got a great price.

I've got two of them in PCGS MS69 that I bought about 7 years ago. Yes, I said MS because these were slabbed before they changed to using SP. I paid a lot more than you did, but that doesn't bother me at all. The coins are beautiful!

Dang my MS70 goes down in value again I guess. Love the coin hate how much I'm into it for now.

I haven't seen these sell for the $250-$300 range for quite some time. They average around $150 each on Teletrade.

Scored this pretty decent example of 'King Kennedy SMS Matte" last night. Price was good, and the coin has some toning:

Beautiful coin. Love the real slight toning at the top of the coin.

Just a question though, what does the SP stand for? I picked up a 2011 Koala PCGS SP69 today. Just not sure of that designation. Neither was the coin dealer. They thought it might be "special proof".

SP = Specimen, although "special proof" is often used as well.

Does it add or subtract from the coin from being MS or PF in the same # grade?

Tone on a proof is a matter of taste. Some folks love high grade proofs toned, some don't. It can definitely add value to the tone lovers, and likewise, make the "blazer enthusiasts" shy away from it. I like both kind of coins--toned and blast white.

DLRC had three at the same price, and I went for the one with the most toning after looking carefully. It arrived looking exactly as the images, and has a nice balance between tone and sparkle. Since it isn't a real 'proof', it is less of an issue--being that it is just a special planchet, but not proof-prepared or struck. :)

  21. There is no difference in the 1998 SMS coin graded SP versus MS, correct? TC
