Recently I posted that I had a great day at the coin shop, getting a chance to pick through a book of world coins, with everything 50 cents each. A good number of the coins I bought were from Africa. Here are many of them. In this batch, an 1821 St. Helena halfpenny (one of my favorites because of the obscurity), 1882 Zanzibar 1 pysa, 1888 Mombasa 1 pice or 1/4 anna.

Last but not least 1966 Uganda 2 shillings.

I had a few others that I already put away, but this is the majority of the African coins.

    Nice batch of coins Hiddendragon.

I recognize all of them except the 1965 Malagasy 1 franc. I suspect that it is from Madagascar. Those are all really neat coins.

I have a couple of the coins from Mali. Have you followed the events in that country over the last few years? I would not like to travel to Timbuktu now.

Thanks for the compliments. I like animal coins and so many of these have nice animal motifs, so that's a big plus for me. Yes, the Malagasy is Madagascar. They must have changed the country's name at some time. That happens a lot in Africa. Remember Zaire? Collect, isn't there an insurgency going on in Mali? So many African countries have that problem.

I wonder what the 61 hippo goes for in good grade.

I looked most of these coins up. The hippo coin is pretty common so I don't think it's much. It's hard to say if it was in really great condition though.

I like East and West Africa coins like you have and I grab them whenever the price is right.

    what is the right price?

Ruben, look at your Madagascar IF. The World Coin Gallery (www.worldcoingallery.com) has you letting that one go at $2.50 in Unc. condition. Now, really. I'll relieve you of it for $2.50! Point is, a lot of these beautiful coins, mine included, while they do regularly trade on eBay at these "right prices," let's be real, those sellers are desperate. They have to be! What nut is going to let a coin like yours go at less than a McDonald's #2 breakfast? However, if you need them for your set, and you can get them at those "right prices," you do so all day long, you're right there with your kisser under the faucet. Right?

    Very nice coins! :thumb:

Careful though, African coins can be addicting and at times troublesome to catalogue.

    You remember!?

Posting the madness of mid 20th century African issues. Beware!
