Got this 1935F Silver Certificate with no In God We Trust on the reverse side of bill. Can't see any indication of it being removed. Any help would be nice.
I believe it was added to paper money during the Eisenhower administration. I had a series 1950 $20 and a series 1969 $20 framed years ago displaying that one had it and the other did not. They were both stolen and I always wonder if the 1950 survived as I still remember the trinary s# 28528528..... Anyway, hope that helps
The reason is the motto IGWT did not appear on currency until 1957. IGWT became our national motto in 1956. October 1, 1957 – “In God We Trust” First Appears on Paper Currency
My Blackbook says: Following notes are without IGWT: 1935, 1935A (blue seal), 1935A (brown seal), 1935A (yellow seal), 1935B, 1935C, 1935D, 1935E, 1935F. 1935G can be found with or without, as it was added during this series and conitnued from series 1935H until present.
This is normal. The motto "In God We Trust" was added to the 1935G series of the $1 bill. You can actually find 1935G notes "with motto" or "without motto". The 1935G notes with the motto are slightly more valuable than without. All $1 notes prior to that, including your note (1935F) do not have a motto.
Below is a listing by denomination of the first production and delivery dates for currency bearing the National Motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST":
Wow, this is crazy. I had no idea there were two versions of the 1935G series. I always thought IGWT started with series 1935H on the $1 notes. One would think the addition of IGWT would have atleast warranted a new letter, if not a new series year altogether.
About 87% of the Series 1935 G $1 Silver Certificates did not have the National Motto on the back: About 13% had the motto:
Changes that only affect the back side of the note don't seem to rate a new series. The 1934C $20 also comes with two different backs, for example....
To which might be added the $2 USN, first delivered March 11, 1964, and the $1 SC, first delivered September 9, 1957. (The latter were Series 1957; the 1935G with motto didn't come along until April 2, 1962.) On the flip side, printings of notes without the motto continued for a while longer as well. The last delivery of notes lacking IGWT (they were 1950E $10's) wasn't until September 16, 1968. So notes with and without the motto were in production simultaneously for just over eleven years!
