Ever get on a "clean up my coin mess" kick? I am in the middle of one right now. I got all of my US coins in a SDB now, (save a few stragglers and bags of stuff), and started working on ancients. I burned through 9 bags, (100 count) of 2x2's and 8 coin boxes the last couple of days trying to get my purchases in some kind of order. I am making a dent, but now I have run out of boxes. I have given up really trying to keep them in pages for now since it would be just too unwieldly and I hate having to reorganize pages. Also, its a pain with ancients since some are too thick and the 2x2's want to fall out of pages. I think my goal will be to get them all in 2x2's. As for fully attributing all of them, yeah, that is a much longer process. Unless they came with attribution, most of these are getting "Byzantine" or "sassanian" at best, and I will get around to looking them all up later. So I wanted to thank the board for recommending JP's Corner. I just placed a good order and everything went very well. They have a promotion of $10 shipping which I am sure saved me quite a bit. As soon as new supplies arrive, I will be getting back at it. Anyway, if anyone was wondering why I wasn't on as much lately, that is my latest passion. I figured I needed to get excited about it and do it before the wife brings down the hammer. Btw, whenever I get around to World coins, any suggestions as to organization? I was thinking by country would be easiest. Anyone do it differently? What would a logical cutoff be deciding whether to put it in a 2x2 be? Anything worth over $5? Chris
I think part of "tidying up" is to get rid of things also, not just organize the massive stockpile/hoard of what you have. Have you thought about getting rid of some of your coins? Based on your description, I fear I may see you on one of the Hoarders shows on television if you don't nip-it-in-the-bud now.
Oh man, I go through this 'clean up' stage at least once every couple of months. Each time I completely rearrange everything. This way it can be as confusing as possible for me. I cannot give any advice because I will just be changing my mind soon anyway. As far as the World coins go. The best way to organize them is alphabetically by the current leader's/president's last name. If the country no longer exists, then use the first initial of the last rulers spouse. simple.
I am afraid I am probably past that point if coins were larger. Thankfully my compulsion are tiny little pieces of metal. Btw, no, I never have any urge to sell anything. I buy, that is what I do. Sometimes I give away, more rarely I trade, but I think buying is my forte. Heck man, I didn't even mention ancient Chinese, which is a lot more quantity than any other ancients I own. Organizing those would be a whole separate order to JP.
Well, that explains it then. Should be much easier. I did pull out all of the world gold and most of the silver in threw it in SDB for safe keeping.
"Ever get the mood to tidy up?" Not. NEARLY. Enough. But that's been my battle for all my life. At least coins are much less space-consuming than many of the things I've hoarded, er, collected over the course of my life.
The last time I had the urge to clean up, I ordered almost $200 worth of supplies. It looks like I need to clean again. The only problem is its not only the coins, my desk is littered with coins, paper currency, comics and trading cards. Its going to take a whole day to clean up.

You should always remember that if something should arrive damaged, all you have to do is give him a call on his 800 line, and he will make good on it. Quick question for ancient collectors out there. I am not really a Roman collector but have a few. I broke it down by Roman Republican, (that box is fairly empty), Roman Imperial, (Augustus until Diocletian), Late Roman, (Diocletian on), and Provincial. Do you do similar or do you strictly break it down by emperor regardless of coinage? Anyone break silver vs copper out?
I just have mine organized from the beginning till the end, meaning...greeks followed by republics then by emperor/empress in the years they reigned and that goes for any coppers of them, then middle eastern followed by early modern.
I'm gonna tidy up a little myself. Sold 2 coins last week and will probably sell a dozen or so before years end. As far as record keeping....they are all in my head, all 46. I can open a box of 20 and point to the coin I'm looking for. That wasn't always the case, in 1999 I had hundreds of coins. Got tired of messing with so many and cleaned house.
Can't say that I was in the mood, but I did it just for you Chris. (I've got my bullion and top coins at the bank btw).
