A coin that I liked a lot, so I purchased it, but it does have a noticeable double-strike on the reverse: Thoughts? Comments?
I don't think it detracts much. A DD on the obverse would be a greater detraction. Really nice coin! I bet that wasn't cheap.
Typical auction coin, with 17.5% vig (buyer's fee) and exchange rate (Swiss Franc) added post-auction. You're correct that a double-strike on the obverse would have been much more detracting, and in fact would have eliminated the coin from my consideration.
Well I would modify my comments, EXTRAORDINARY coin. That is the type of high dollar, spectacular sestertii collectors think about stabbing others over. You typically only see such coins in the very finest collections. Well done IdesofMarch.
Thanks for the compliments. Compared to other ancient collections here, the scope of my own collection is somewhat prosaic: portrait coins of the 12 Caesars. Right now I'm focusing on the brass (AE) coins, specifically portrait asses and sestertii of the 12 Caesars. My goal is to eventually have one portrait coin of each major denomination (as, sestertius, denarius, aureus) except for those Caesars who didn't strike these coins (viz., Julius Caesar and Otho).
Yeah, I was about ready to type "good luck with Otho". I find your collection commendable, if expensive. Many collectors have concentrated on the 12 Caesars due to the book.
I love it! Galba was a really cool emperor, for all of three months. What an incredible coin. It really captures the features rigid Suetonius talked about.
Only one: Fantastic coin! And far superior to mine, from similar reverse dies. Looking at it, it also seems to have a faint double strike on reverse.
