This one stumps me. I bought a PCGS 1880-S and the reverse has two "chunks" taken out of the plastic. What gets me is both damaged areas are symmetrical - looking like a saw blade! You know how companies will "punch out" a barcode? The damage reminds me of something like that... it was a deliberate act/process. Any ideas what this is all about?
C'mon Kev, You have been a member since 2010 and you still don't know the #1 rule? Pics or it didn't happen.
OK... I'll give 'er a try... I know the rules --- didn't think I could get a good shot Turned out ok... but the 'damage' is deeper than it looks in the photo... Right side at 1-3 o'clock and bottom side at 5:30...
I had almost the same exact damage on a slab that came from Heritage. I no longer own the coin so I can't take pics.
Actually, the pics have me more confused. The bottom mark looks like it was molded that way, but the side one looks like it was gouged by some one. Mike
Imagine a thick toothed saw blade... that's what the side of the slab looks like. I could literally "saw" with it if I wanted to. Very strange. I guess being somewhat new to slabbed coinage, maybe the thread should have been, "What amount of damage/wear is acceptable when purchasing a graded coin?" I know most would say as long as it doesn't damage the coin... but in THIS case the dumb slab could slice ones' finger open!!
