they are the best in the world, train for their enire lives. They create billions in revenue. Dont you think they deserve a gold medal made of gold. sorry for the rant. I just saw a news story on how their made.
The Olympics typically ends up in the red as it is. Do you understand the amount of money you are talking about for each gold medal if they made them of solid gold? The silver medal weighs between four and six oz. A gold medal would weigh nearly twice as much. You are talking ten to twelve oz per medal. And how many hundreds of gold medals would be needed?
10K at least. Compared to what is spent on the games, the athletes who win one deserve some "real" gold. Good luck U.S. 2012!
wouldn't mind seeing an Olympic commemorative for some sports, like beach volleyball. I have only met the following Olympians: Sammy Lee, Karch Kiraly, Kent Steffes, Mike Whitmarsh, Mike Dodd, Holly McPeak, Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh, Todd Rogers, Phil Dalhausser, Rego, Sean Rosenthal, Jake Gibb, Gretchen Bleiler, Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Shannon Dunn-Downing, Ross Powers and a few more. mostly, beach volleyball players and snowboarders.
What is the silver medal made of then? If it is silver, I would rather place second for a more valuable metal to sell
With about 5 grams of gold. Not that it really matters because most atheletes would never dream of selling their gold medal, and even if they did it will bring considerably more than the metal content even if it was pure gold. Depending on the event an olympic gold medal can bring mid five figures and up. One from a popular event or from a famous athelete can bring $100K or more.
They made close 4.39 billion dollars from NBC license deal alone but IOC is extremely corrupt and incompetent and it is they who are responsible for handing out medals not the country hosts it.
Corruption usually takes at least two ends or sides. And yes, of course it is not the host city but the IOC that awards the medals. The "gold medals" are gold-plated silver (minimum gold content 6 grams), the two others are what the names suggest. Christian
I remember how disappointed I was to learn that the Olympic gold medals awarded to first-place finishers were gold-plated only.
