ANA Summer Seminar 2012 begins June 23 in Colorado Springs. Who will attending this year? I am attending both weeks. Week 1 I am taking 'Collecting Ancient Coins' and the mini-seminar on Conder Tokens. Week 2 I am taking 'Flying Eagle Cents and Indian Head Cents' taught by Rick Snow and the mini-seminar on Byzantine coins. In another thread the following CoinTalk members have indicated they will be attending Summer Seminar: Coincast - attending both weeks - Grading 1 & Counterfeit Detection Blu62vette - teaching Advanced Photography Week 2 Silver king - attending both weeks - Collecting Ancient Coins & Counterfeit Detection RiverGuy - attending both weeks - EAC & Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents Valente151 - attending Week 2 - Grading 2 + Numismatic Valuations mini-seminar Kanga - attending both weeks - Grading 1 & 2 If any other CoinTalk members plan to attend please let us know. RiverGuy (Don) and I would like to arrange a time and place for CoinTalk members to meet so we can get to know one another in person. We will probably meet during lunch one day. We will let everyone know when and where. Hope to see everyone there!
I'm counting down the days. My 1st time I attended for just one week and quickly regretted it. Now it's two and I wish it were longer. I've learned to start planning in January for the annual summer pilgrimage and when I return home in July I find it hard to waite for the next year. I can't remember talking to any participant - student or teacher - who didn't feel the same way. When I arrive on campus June 23rd, it's to walk into registration and greet a roomful of friends smiling like we just said goodby to each other the day before. I can't wait!!! Bruce and I look forward to shaking hands with all of you - in person!!
Unfortunately the numismatic valuations filled up before I could enroll! Still taking grading and will see if its possible to get into the miniseminar once I get there.
I am attending both weeks first time as a yn. Grading 1 and counterfeit detection. Doing the valuation seminar and gold mine trip. Might try to do another trip since the mint trip got cancelled. I would like to do a lunch.
Grading I & Counterfeit Detection are two GREAT courses to take. Bob & JP are excellent instructors for counterfeit detection. I had not heard the Mint tour got cancelled. What happened? I was not signed up for the Mint tour (I have taken the tour numerous times before). Why don't we try to get all the CoinTalk members together during lunch (in the lunchroom) on Sunday the 24th? I will try to make up a sign so you can find us. Does that sound like a plan? If that works I will plan on having another get-together the following Sunday - same place, same time.
The tour was cancelled because the mint is switching to a 4 day work week so it didn't work out. That works great. For the second one the mine tour gets back at noon so hopefully it is on time so I can make the second one.
I will probably not be able to attend Week II of Summer Seminar due to the Waldo Canyon Fire. I do disaster inspections for FEMA and I have been put on standby for the Colorado fires. The call to deploy could come at any moment. I live in Colorado Springs so all I have to do is drive across town and start inspecting. Unfortunately that means that I will probably have to miss Week II I was looking forward to taking Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents with Rick Snow. I ran in Rick at ANA headquarters today and let him know. I will also miss a mini-seminar on Byzantine coins. That is if I get the call to deploy. Until I get the call I will attend and then leave if I have to. It was great to meet vnickels yesterday. Sorry if I don't get to meet those attending Week II. (It can't be helped but this is a disaster that I cannot miss.)
Another person affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire is The Penny Lady®. Yesterday Rick Snow told me Charmy had cancelled and will not attend Week II. That is a shame. I was looking forward to seeing her.
I gasped! You make it sound as if she was killed in the fire... But obviously it was unintentional. -Brian
You're right. Poor choice of words. Sorry about that. I cannot edit my post for some reason but I will reword it when I am able to.
Bruce, please keep us updated. The local news this morning reported many homes in the area going up in flames. Stay safe my friend....
I don't think any houses have been lost since Tuesday or Wednesday. There are still plenty of hot spots and small to medium fires on the east-facing slopes of the mountains above the burned houses but I am not aware of any fires down around the houses. There are still HUGE fires on the back side of the ridge but the two largest were back burns set by the firefighters. We are not out of the woods by any means. If we get wind again like we did on Tuesday we could have another huge conflagration.
