"extremely unlikely." Totally agree. I have done well with bank bags, but I have never found anything older than a Franklin in a roll.
Depends, not all S mint coins are silver. They would need to be from a silver proof set, for from 1964-1970. Most of the S mint proof coins, at least the ones I have found, have all been clad.
I think you misunderstood woodsman's question. He is specifically asking about bicenntennial Kennedy's (Other proof Kennnedy's that are silver would be 90% after 1976). Woodsman: Some 1976 Kennedy's (S mint only) are 40% silver, and some are not. You'll just have to look at the edge, or do a sound test to tell.
Sorry you are way off. Wish you were right. But it ain't so in todays market. We sort one $500 box (1,000 half dollars) a day. On average we find just one 40% or 90% silver half dollar per box. 1 silver coin out of 1,000. The last 15 boxes sorted gave us 15 coins; 6 were 90% Franklins, Kennedys and Walking Liberties. The other 9 where 40% Kennedys. I wouldn't do it by myself but my daughter brings me 1 box of half dollars and 4 boxes of pennies every day (Mon - Fri). I do the sorting watching TV or listening to music (it takes me about 1 to 2 hours per day). She recycles the coins the next day. We throw the silver half dollars into a "Treasure Chest" we bought. We store the pennies in 50 pound bags. Over time (years) you will be amazed how much silver and copper you can accumulate - But it Ain't Get Rich Quick.
My banks wont order them for me, Ive went to 3 different banks (small town) and they say they "cant" order them we all know better. Their if is a bigger city about 30 Minutes away Should I try there? Info please?
not that cincy is much "bigger" than indy, but the banks here in the 'nati usually have havles. maybe not a box, but some rolls, 3 to 10 at least. i imagine indy is the same way, if you can get there.
Help for someone wating to join in? I got pretty interested when I heard about this. It sounds like a smart (albeit possibly time-consuming) way to get cheap silver. However, I still have some questions. Considering I live in a metropolitan area of about 700,000 people, is it even worth trying? All the advice I've seen has pointed toward less populated areas. If it is, which kind of bank is the best to try? I'm a member of a credit union, but I know of local, regional, and national banks nearby. Does it matter? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
competition for halves in urban/suburban areas can be incredibly fierce. If your area is anything like mine, you'll find nothing in 2 out of 3 boxes, and when you do find halves it'll be 1-5 40% kennedy's per box. By me, most boxes I get (at 3 or 4 different bank chains) are covered with all different roll searchers marks and the "pool" of available halves are mostly picked clean. You can try in your area, but chances are halves are dead in your area just like everyone else. Also, keep in mind that half of the problem with getting large numbers of halves is disposing of them. Not a lot of banks want to accept a deposit of several hundred dollars worth of half dollars (and don't ever make the mistake of dumping them at the bank where you picked them up!)
Aloha all , 1st post here started roll hunting about a month ago have a question about bank bags as i have seen the term referenced on this thread , what exactly do you mean , do the banks keep seperate bags of each denomination turned in loose by customers and then turn them in when they are full .Thanks for your time
question regarding armored car companies Aloha I started getting boxes of halves from one bank and dumping them at another , although read somewhere that you want to make sure that both banks dont use the same armored car service , is there truth to that , as can you get back the same coins even though you bringing them to a different bank .can anyone break down the process
I've gone through several boxes of halves and haven't found any silver. However, I did find a 1972 d doubled die on the reverse. The letters United States are doubled. It's circulated. Any one have any idea of its worth? Can't find any info or any pics online about this error or how common it is. Thanks!
