Yesterday, while at the local flea market, I acquired the P&D Kennedy halves from this year. These two coins finish up the Dansco 8166 album, completing the 8th and final page.

Obviously, there are numerous varieties and special edition coins that can be added to a set to reach various levels of "completeness" in the eye of the individual collector. These might include the 1998 Matte Proof, perhaps a 74-D DDO, an Accented Hair 64 Proof, or any number of others. My own set includes several of these in a separate "blank" Dansco "Half Dollars" album.

However, the 8166 itself ends with the D Mint 2012 half. Dansco has not yet issued a 9th page, and there are many who suspect they will not do so, choosing instead to split the Kennedy Half set into 2 different albums, since a full 8166 is rather heavy as it sits now.

That being the case, then, I decided to do some very quick (and entirely lousy) photos of the 8 pages of my now "complete" 8166, and share them here. Plans for the future include continuing the set as new coins are released, and upgrading 64-70 circulating coins as I find better examples in rolls. :)

    Enjoy!

Nice job gboulton. I enjoy the Kennedy series, and your set looks very nice.

Very nice. I have a question for people who have the proofs in their collections:

Did you break them out of proof sets or buy them separate?

Looks great! Still working on mine.

I buy my proofs seperate for the most part.

I can tell you what I did... I bought large lots of proof sets and mint sets. I then bought all of the Danscos, and broke up every single set to fill them.
That way, I have no one to blame but myself if the coin has fingerprints on it.

Thanks for the kind words, gang! :)

Most of the clad proofs I buy separate. I have no use for any of the other coins in the set.

Silver proofs are broken out of sets. The rest of the silver in a silver proof set can be sold for more than enough to make up the price difference between the set and what most dealers charge for individual silver proof halves...and, as it happens, I rather like the ATB quarters in silver, so I don't mind holding on to them for a while. :)

There's a couple of notable exceptions in my set...the 69-S and 82-S proofs I pulled from rolls, oddly enough. (The 69-S looks it too *lol*) I have a fondness for such things, since i think the coin must have a more interesting story to tell than one that simply sat around in a plastic case all its life. Given that there's no serious premium on most of the Kennedy halves, I don't mind including such things in a set from a "value" perspective either.

  11. Very cool, GB. I have a Dansco Kennedy album, but I don't have proofs. :(

You actually surprised me with this album! I never would have thought.

Congratulations on filling your album! :thumb:

I’ve been dabbling with the Kennedy series for eight years now and wonder if I will ever complete the collection. There seems to be always the next coin to find, but this is the fun part of the hobby.

Glad to hear that you will be “fine tuning” your set looking for upgrades, the hunt is always the fun part.

    Thanks, Caleb! :)

Keep at it...it's a fun set to work on! Not only are there new varieties and types being found pretty regularly, but there's lots of opportunities to find interesting examples in rolls or circulation, even proof coins as I said above. :)

Yes, finding / collecting varieties of Kennedy half dollars is fun! Here is a link to our variety set:
