    Wrong.

No one, no matter how they present themselves, deserves abuse of any kind.

That's like saying, "she deserved to be raped because of the way she was dressed."

You know what Rick meant by "abuse", so to knowingly and completely take it out of context, then compare to a woman being raped was totally uncalled for.

Living in the country of the revolution and "Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme", i am fundamentally aligned with the principle that every human being deserves respect.
Everybody - also as human being, myself included - can make mistakes, and they are rules or laws to take care of some of them.
I make sometimes some jokes but i must confess that the situation seems so weird some times that it is very difficult to resist !
Regarding Detecto's threads, they are not to be dispised but just look at with some discernment. They bring (sometimes) some freshness ( and so was Detecto's previous avatar for instance )and originality i do appreciate . In addition to that, it is easy to see that these threads so criticized bring always a lot of replies and likes ...so what ?
That was just my "2 centimes" today and i will stop there my feeding to this thread

Point well made and taken. I have edited my post to change the word "abuse" to "ridicule".

Generally speaking, scans reveal flaws that pics don't. So a scanned image doesn;t seem to be an effort to fool the buyer. I don;t think the seller tried to misrepresent the coin at all. He offers to accept returns. So, since you are dissatisfied, just return it. Get your money or another coin.

I just don;t see what the problem is. We all know when buying online that a coin may not look exaclty like the pic. I mean, I've gotten some really great "bargains" because the pic was poor, but the coin was great ! Knowing the seller accepts returns makes it just too easy. IMHO

I'm not saying it he hasn't brought it upon himself. What I am saying is this is a place where civil discussions are permitted...not personal attacks. We can educate someone here in a stern (if needed) but respectful way. When he or anyone else posts something and gets a deserved stern response, that is fine. However, this thread began to deteriorate more into personal attacks than discussions about the original topic. Personal attacks are not permitted here.

I slept on it a couple days (well not literally) and I have decided to keep it.

On a lighter note, I picked up another bad image one for under $4 shipped. Besides the rim rub, this has nice, original surface.

I think keeping it is probably the right move. But, I would really caution you on purchasing coins with bad pics. It's a real crap-shoot that often doesn't pay off. Spend your money buying things that you know what you're getting. In the end, you will be far better off.

I'm still under the impression that the coin Detecto bid on and the one he received is not the same coin.

I think a lot of people here need to remember when they were new to the hobby and they may have been perceived in much the same way they are perceiving Detecto.

True but most of his threads aren't really about the "coin", it's more about eBay it seems in these types of threads he starts.

Detecto rode into town on his white horse almost a year ago, announcing that he was the new sheriff and that he was single handedly going to save numismatics from all of the charlatans, liars, cheats and thieves. Sadly, he still believes that that is his mission in life. A mission that he is ill-equipped to carry out. He even went so far as to appoint himself to the position of "Hobby Ambassador".

Many have tried to advise him. He does/will not listen to any advice offered to him. He fancies himself a professional numismatist. He offers advice, sometimes good, most times bad, but when good, it's always advice that he himself does/will not follow.

Detecto seems to have a vendetta against all Ebay sellers. He is under the impression that all of them are out to cheat him in some devious manner, yet he continues to make purchases on Ebay, then complain about the poor quality of his purchases and pushes the "negative" button before making any attempt to rectify the situation. It has been alleged here on CT that he has at least two Ebay accounts and he bids on his own listings. I don't know if that is true, and I certainly hope it is not, but if it is, is he not guilty of the chicanery he accuses others of?

All Detecto has to do is sit back and take some time to think before acting.

But then again, he may actually crave and enjoy the ridicule.

But then again, he does have a talent for opening threads/writing posts that gets people to respond. I don't believe I've seen any of his threads go nowhere. So the onus isn't only on him, it's on everyone who is responding to his initial postings. And I'm guilty of that, too.

But, unfortunately, in this hobby, people really do get involved in their own positions enough that they go a bit further than they probably could in making their points. He's not a hobby ambassador, as his posting has shown, except in his own mind. (That's a fact, not a personal attack --- there are many things I am not that other people might think I want to say I am, as well as any other person).

The problem, as I see it, is that here is someone who is blatently promoting his own ideas, poorly formed and not in line with current thinking in Numismatics, getting people up in arms about it. I am thinking I need to chill more, and find productive ways to inform people that ideas such as this are not helpful and detrimental to the hobby, without making it personal.

But it's not just helpful to say let someone alone, under the guise of not picking on the person, when doing so just allows that line of thinking to go unchallenged. It probably is more helpful to really stand back and take a look at what constitutes personal attacks, and what is not a personal attack but words that are communicating opposition to a line of thinking, or communicating to someone that their behavior is not consistent or even consistent with what is generally acceptable (pc as it were, in an un-pc context) and thus their words can't be trusted.

Maybe if his posts get no responses he'll come around or go away.
I may be alone in this but I'll pay him no more attention.

That's not really true. I've purchased over 50 coins on eBay. I've had maybe 2 bad experiences.

I don't think the majority of eBay sellers are bad, but a couple of them really are out there to take you.

I do not have two eBay accounts. I have one, and my parents do. I have never sold anything on my account, it's strictly buying.
