Was there a show or movie called Captains and Kings that I've just never heard of? Or a play? And was the brothel token a runner-up prize for not getting the empire?

It was the novel where I read it. They made a mini series out of
it in the 80's but I don't the recall the token being in it. The
boss, in the novel, just took a liking to Joeseph and gave him
the token. But he carried it as a pocket piece for awhile.

That is an excellent novel, and yes they made a miniseries. It's the only book my Dad ever told me that I HAD to read (besides my current Haynes manual). I forgot about the token, though.... I may have to go read it again! (For the fourth time...)

It's too danged late, and I'm oh so tired to respond.....the real question is "were there any real brothels"? Answer that and I do believe you will find your token........:)

You forgot about Joseph's token? Oh dear:

The Famous Mustang Ranch was once seized by the Feds and ran by them. It finally went bankrupt under that supervision. Kinda makes ya wonder..............doesn't it ?

The Feds ended up selling it on Ebay for a little over $130,000.00.

There are a type of ancient Roman exonumia called spintria which were most likely used as brothel tokens. There is some historical debate on this issue, but personally I feel that the use of spintria as brothel tokens is the only plausible exlanation.

Spintria were bronze tokens, smaller than a sestertius, with a depiction of an intimate act on one side and a Roman numeral (probably corresponding to price) on the other.

Ahh, good old Ft. Hood! I was stationed at West Ft. Hood, 1970-1971. Killeen was a dry town, and the only place you could be served cocktails was at a private club supposedly owned by the mayor. You had to pay a $10 "membership fee" every night. It was also rumored that the mayor owned the Cowhouse Hotel which was purported to be a "front" for a house of ill-repute.
