Everybody knows about the rare off-metal errors which resulted in the 1943 copper and 1944 steel cents. Less well known are the wartime nickels which should have been struck on the 35% silver wartime planchets, but instead got struck on the old copper-nickel planchets of the prewar composition. The dealer who had this (on display, not for sale) was of the apparent opinion that he’s got a real sleeper here. I, for one, am not inclined to disagree with him. I totally overlooked the coin at first (ho-hum, a circulated Jefferson- really?) But then it dawned on me what I was seeing. I’m not really an error coin guy, but wow.
I really like the look of this one: What is this coin so that I might do some research? Any idea to value?
Dang, sorry. Dunno. It’s at the Gorny & Mosch table. I’ll try to remember to go back to get a better look for you. I’ve stepped outside for a break before I go back in and take the plunge into the main World & Ancients section. I’m after a thaler, so I need to sniff around there some more.
The reason I ask is because there was a fellow with a top hat walking around with the 'Wizard' coin folks.
Here you go. The dealer is German, so so is the print on the flip insert. I assume the marked price is in Euros. It is apparently a 1624 reichsthaler from Brunswick-Celle-Calenberg. Nice one, too. There’s some luster there.
