Detecto - it was 'genuine'!!!! And now it's... not genuine? I was picturing someone cracking out MS66 Morgans, for some reason. Please *don't* show a picture of that, if you have one. PS: Thanks cpm9ball!
It was also his fussing over a scratched slab where he could've buffed it out, but rather than buff it or send it back to TT, he cracked it and sold it as problem free.
So far all my slabs are in a Whitman box. I may get some better boxes to hold them but don't know which ones are the best.
About 2 years ago, I got 4-5 PCGS boxes. I got sick of having to keep them closed with rubberbands, as they only fit PCGS slabs correctly....so I've since migrated to all NGC boxes. NGC boxes are way better than PCGS, they will fit all of the main types (Hallmark, PCI, ANACS, NGC, PCGS, ICG). The best price for new NGC boxes around are from jpscorner.com (Link here)or from cwtguy on eBay. They run around $9-$10 each shipped usually. (If someone knows somewhere less expensive please let me and others know). Also, as a second choice for less expensive coins, those simple cardboard double row slab boxes fit great in my safe deposit box and can hold about 50 coins each (I rubberband groups of 4-5 slabs together). I usually also throw a couple packs of desicant in the cardboard boxes before putting them in my SDB. The double row boxes are also less expensive than the plastic boxes for your less precious coins.
I use Intercept boxes with the slab covers that come in them. PCGS slabs wont fit in the covers but they will fit in the boxes loose. Wood is not an inert material. I wouldnt use anything other than Intercept boxes. The slips protect the slabs from getting scratched up too. Which contrary to popular belief, matters, if you ever want to photograph something. Hmm. People must not like the value and protection that slabs add to an authenticated, professionally graded coin. If you need one for an album it makes sense. But to just crack them out for the fun of it seems foolish to me.
If we did away with slabs, as you suggest, then we would probably be inundated with threads where people complained about buying problem coins on SleazeBay. Slabs can, and do, serve a useful purpose, but your comment has absolutely no bearing on the OP's original question. Chris
Maybe we could just make a sticky "I bought a problem coin on SleazeBay" thread. Then we wouldn't get inundated with multiple threads. The man asked how we stored our slabs. That's how I store mine.
I'll try to remember that the next time you start a thread asking a question. I'll do my best to post an inappropriate answer. Then again, judging from your post count, I may have to wait a long time. Chris
Are you suggesting that post count has anything to do with anything? Do I have to post another 9000 times before I earn the right to drop some humor in a public forum? My post may technically have been a bit off topic, but there was nothing inappropriate about it. But if post quantity is important to you then let's examine it a little farther. Personally, I tend to judge a track record not on quantity, but on quality. For instance, my measly number of posts have been liked 32% of the time, your batting 10%. So what does that mean? Herein may lie the difference. I buy coins because I like to look at them, and I like to display them so that others can look at them. To me, buying a coin and tucking it away in a SDB would kinda defeat the purpose of owning it in the first place. If I were going to put the coins in a SDB, then I absolutely would leave them in the slabs. But I keep my coins in display cases on the wall, and honestly, I just don't think that slabbed coins make for attractive displays. That's why I crack them out, and I store the slabs in a stack, in a drawer, in my bedroom......empty.
I have 5 NGC boxes, 0 PCGS boxes (for the reasons stated in earlier posts). I really like the idea of the Eagle pages and binders. I think I may need to make a late purchase on ebay tonight... In regards to SDB, seems like it would be hard to get the coins out and enjoy them, but i guess that's what high quality photos are for? I actually have a SDB, but only with tax records and important docs, 0 coins. Maybe I need to start buying more valuable coins. Question, why the shrinkwrap?
You crack-out people are seriously hijacking this thread... If you want to crack-em-out, that's fine, but why are you gumming up a thread about storing slabs? (ps, Cherd, I did like the photo about storing the empty slabs, which at least was semi on-topic and funny.) Just saying...
