In the Northern Hemisphere, June 20, 2012 is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. In observance of this great day, let's post some coins depicting the sun.

Here are two of my favorites. :hail: They are both 2 Reales coins of the Central American Republic and Honduras. The main device here is the sun shining over five mountains. Similar devices can be found on coins of Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

In the early 19th Century, the countries in Central America saw the success of the USA in North America & formed the United States of Central America. The new country was called the Central American Republic and consisted of countries previously known as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, & Guatemala. The union broke up about 20 years later & re-formed their original countries with individual monetary systems.

If you have a coin with a sun on it, post it today. There are several US coins with the sun on them.

Only three from a series of French collector coins. Each issue has the sun (and the Sower) in a different position.

That coin is very cool and I bet it would look great in high grade mint state. Do you have a photo of the other side and what is the composition?

The other side of the coin depicts the bust of Jose Gervasio Artigas. Sorry I can't locate a photo right now.

The 1942 1 peso depicted is made of 0.7200 silver and has a mintage of 9 million. It is available as a bullion coin in low grades. The catalog for UNC is something like $40.

Uruguay also uses the same cat & sun device on their 1930 & 1936 10 Centesimos coins. These also have high mintages with UNC catalog of about $40. They are struck in beautiful Aluminum-Bronze.

Sorry, these are older pictures, but I have always liked the sun design of this so-called-dollar. :)

This is a nice sun design from North Korea. Again sorry for the older, low quality pictures.

    United States of Central America

Here is a 1 real from the Republic of Central America. It has a hole in it. This is typical for the coins of this type.

Clothing in 1830 Central America didn't necessarily have pockets to conveniently hold the coins. Therefore, folks tied their money together on a string so as not to loose the coins. I've seen photographs of people at a Central American train station where they appear to be selling these old coins as souvenirs. They had dozens of coins strung on their strings.
