    Looked ok from the scans:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/330745099604?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

What I got instead: cleaned junk.

Opened a case, and waiting to hear back.

As many scanned coins as a I see, I wonder if sellers use scanners on purpose to hide things.

What really burns, is that the seller said he would note any cleaning if he could see it. This coin is obviously cleaned. Either the seller is to ignorant to notice a cleaned coin, or ripped me off on purpose.

Agreed. I don't understand why you are so upset. You purchased a coin with terrible photos...what did you expect to get?

The seller's photos look different from your picture, but looking at yours it doesn't look obviously cleaned to me. It is lighter on some surfaces but that could be wear. I've seen cleaned coins and they look bright orange. I don't see that on yours.

It's been cleaned and retoned from the looks of it. For what it is you didn't get a horrible deal on it.

It could only be lighter on the surfaces if it was a modern coin. This coin has probably not circulated for 150+ years. If the surface brightened from wear, it would brown over by now. Also the surfaces are very smooth, and you can almost see a reflection. This is evident of polishing.

Yep... tiny little pics that don't enlarge. On a side note, I must say that Detecto's photos are outstanding.

Why wouldn't you just contact the seller and express your dissatisfaction? He has a liberal return policy, and I'm sure he would want to make you happy, either by a return or a partial refund.

You immediately opened a case without contacting the seller? After recently advising someone essentially in the same position that they should slow down? You continue to leave yourself wide open.

Yeah... I like it too. Definitely not junk, but a nice piece of history. If it were me, I'd keep it and give the seller positive feedback.

I don't care who you are, that's funny!

My question to the original poster is: Did you have to snipp to win it?

I like it too. He actually paid a decent price for what he got. I'd probably keep it and learn from this experience. Perhaps in the future don't bid on coins with bad photos.

Well I apologize about opening a case. When I sold on eBay, people always opened a case, before contacting me, so I just thought it was standard procedure.

As far as the coin, I don't want a cleaned coin.

The point is, the seller said in his description that he would try to point out if a coin has been cleaned. This is a very obvious cleaning. It's not like you needed to take a loupe and study it.

    I'l just return the coin.

Sometimes you can luck out on a scanned coin, but this time I didn't.

What is procedure whit "not opening a case"?
I never heard of such thing!

IMO it is 15 bucks better of keeping it and selling it later (with good pics and better listing you can make a quick profit), rather than going thru the hassle of trying to return it.
