1913 Mexican 'Caballito' 1 Peso Graded: ANACS MS 63 This coin has a nice strike amongst many that are rather mushy for this type. I agree with the grade ANACS gave the coin as well. It's in an older generation ANACS holder, white label with green lettering and a hologram on the reverse. I think it's a 5th generation holder from the late 1990s or there about. The toning is rather heavily mottled but there exists subtle color which I feel better image would bring out for viewers, as I can see it in hand. Such tone as this obscures the design a bit and certainly will not appeal to everyone, plus these pics are poor. I find that such tone 'patterns' are not uncommon on this era of Mexican coinage. These images were taken in diffuse natural day light (no artificial lighting). The two sides of the coin are totally different in color. While the eagle side has typical reddish-golden tone in the lower areas, the fields, at some angles the color comes off with an overall purplish hue as in this image. The horse/rider side has dark stripes of tone approaching a blue-black. They do not appear (to me) to be damage or contamination, and the rest of this side of the coin is bright and clean.
Were the coin one of 3 known, the finest, and highly sought after by millions of collectors, I bet the assigned grade would have been an MS62. But only after being graded AU53 by NGC, then AU55 by PCGS, then AU58 by NGC, then MS60 by PCGS, then MS61 by NGC...,, Well, you get the idea...
Prince, you're kind of right...but in the opposite direction of where this one has been. I didn't resubmit it to PCGS, but the previous owner did. This one was in an NGC AU58 holder prior to it being graded and encapsulated in the current PCGS AU50 Secure Plus holder. I don't really care what the holder says, because I like it regardless.
Also from the dollar box comes this wild boar coin: 1987 Bermuda 1 cent (Actually the dealer threw this one in for free but it came from the dollar box).
Last but not least, I got this silver Italy 500 Lire. This was a 1-year issue commemorating the 100 year (Centennial) of Italy's Unification. This coin is the size of a US half dollar just like the other really nice Italy 500 Lire coins. 1961 Italy 500 Lire
I am somewhat surprised you have not shown any interest in the latest collector coin from Slovakia. Ever heard of Moses "Chatam" Sofer? This coin was issued yesterday. Unfortunately it costs roughly three times the face value. Edit: In a way my post was off-topic here. The Sofer coin is not my newest acquisition. I do not have it, don't know whether I will buy it, and I'm not a coin dealer either. But I find both the theme and the design interesting, so why not leave the post here ... Christian
Why not? ...because the thread title is "Your newest foreigh acquisitions!" and you just told us you haven't acquired this coin.
There is nothing on this in the news. Where did you learn of this. it is nice that they didn't put their traditional reverse on it. Ruben
Guess this is an issue of where such coins are marketed. A euro collector coin is, unlike the circulation coins and commemorative €2 coins, not even legal tender outside the issuing country. But if the theme and/or design is appealing ... This is the web site of the mint in Kremnica that krispy just mentioned: http://www.mint.sk/aktuality.php?lang=en This is a notice published by the central bank (at the bottom they also have a link to the design contest): http://www.nbs.sk/en/banknotes-and-...ns/silver-collector-coin-10-euro-chatam-sofer And this is the folder that explains the coin and the background: http://www.nbs.sk/_img/Documents/_BankovkyMince/Zberatelske/ChatamSofer/Sofer-a.pdf All three links are in English. So I guess they do expect to sell some of these outside Slovakia. Christian
They didn't show in google. I have an alert for Jewish and Coins... nothing. I just ran a search for Slovokia coins, Sofer Coins etc etc. Nothing. They are running in silent mode. do you actually look at each mints website every week? Ruben (Ruben Safir btw) as you actually know ...
I used Google to run a text search. Since we already knew from chrislid that the coin was from Slovakia it made sense to search with the terms, "slovakia mint". It was the first page in Google seach results, and the coin in questions was on the home page. Maybe your filter / search terms are too GENERIC.
It was not printed by the B.E.P. but rather American Bank Note Company for Eaton Fine Letter Papers. This is not a denominated stamp, but instead is a Cinderella stamp. You can see the rest of the set (all NYC themed) in this ABNCo thread.
58 sounds about right to me. PCGS kind of blew it on the grade. And because its in a secure plus holder they can never admit they blew it and assign the proper grade. One more reason to send coins to NGC instead. Nothing against PCGS, but they seem to make these kinds of mistakes on a fairly regular basis.
