I didn't recognize the $2 1/2 Sesqui coin. Of course I read the coin & then looked it up but at first I was puzzled because I didn't recognize it as a half dollar

The Swiatek & Breen book reminds us that the 2 1/2 was designed in very low relief. They also state in the book that there are oodles of die struck counterfeits out there. Yours looks to be one of the better struck, genuine examples. Thanks for sharing it.

    Thanks Collect89!
It's genuine alright, but not 'Genuine' in terms of grade! :D PCGS gave it an AU 55.

I spent a lot of time, a couple of years actually, pondering which side of the AU / MS divide I wanted to focus on with coin. Eventually, I felt that when a decently struck example came along in AU that this was the one for me. It's one of my favorite US coins. I like the softer details and the Art Deco-like sculptural quality of the figure. While considering and learning about this coin, I looked at MANY of these coins before committing to buying. I only considered those in NGC or PCGS so I wouldn't have to risk dealing with raw examples that may have been cleaned poorly or removed from bezels, fake, and so on.

There are many of these slabbed by the TPGs. Plenty of them in the AU and low MS grades for reasonable prices. Fewer exist slabbed and at obtainable price ranges in the upper MS range, which I believe tops out at 67 for this coin. Somewhere over 46,000 minted, but I doubt they all survive in collections. There are lots with mushy details and plenty have developed significant amounts of red spots on them too.

Anyway, thanks again for the comments and checking that book about the coin. :thumb:

Added a new one last night. I bid 50, not expecting to get it, and after watching TV for a while was surprised to find that I won it for $49.78. I really liked the display and the tie-in with my old stamp collecting hobby.

1920, three Commemorative Stamps issued in Provincetown and Plymouth, Massachusetts. Interestingly, these are supposedly the only US stamps ever printed without identifying the nation of issue being the US.

The Swiatek & Breen book depicts the 1 cent stamp commemorating the Pilgrim Tercentenary celebrations. This is a nice tie-in to the coin & thanks for posting the photos. :thumb:

You're welcome! That tie-in, and the display, is what got me interested in the set.

I got two commemoratives this weekend. This first one is colorful so I'll post it in a couple different threads. I paid MS64 money for this coin in a MS63 holder. I'm quite happy with it. :smile

The 2nd commemorative purchased this weekend is this Isabella quarter.

The fields are kind-of proof like. Even the little triangle of field to the left of the woman's left hand is proof like. There are some lustrous flow lines in the fields so it is most probably a business strike.

According to the PCGS label you have the very rare 1935 over 1934 overdate

Of course, I'm kidding. That is a nice high-grade Boone with the 1934 Pioneer year reverse.

It is difficult to photograph the Isabella quarter because of the proof like surface. I'll try using fluorescent lighting & diffuse lighting techniques. I'll post if I get any better results.

Had this for a long time. Looking to upgrade to a MS66/67 with nice natural tones.

Sorry for the delay. What is it about women? Is it their sworn mission in life to side-track husbands? :)

I won this off of Teletrade last Tuesday night. For the last few weeks the Tuesday night auctions have been filled with 'details slabs' and lack luster commems, but this one stood out as I tuned in with 10 minutes to go in the auction. I set my price and forgot about it till later that evening when I discovered I had won this piece and one other........

This Stone Mountain came in a details slab and like the California, I chose a price I was comfortable with and later found out I had won. I plan on cracking it out and maybe using it as a pocket piece.

Nice Prospector Ken! But that Stone Mountain looks like it was cleaned with sandpaper. Maybe you can help it out as a pocket piece.:)

LOL, that's what I told the wife when it arrived today. The California almost mimics proof like and I'm amazed this coin didn't get higher marks......
