1941 Lincoln Cent (Proof). One of the most unusual 1941 Lincoln Proofs I've seen in terms of striking color. I bought this coin (raw) for $30 on eBay, and PCGS just came back with a PR64BN grade late last week. It's easy to forget how low the mintage's were on these pre-WWII Lincoln Proofs (Only 32,600 proofs were minted in 1941).

Seriously? Only $30? I have been scouring the 'bay for a '41 proof at a decent price and here you waltz in with an absolutely stunning Multicolored proofie. Love it BTW. But I am super jealous.

Very depressing isn't it? Why can't an awesome deal fall into my lap like this?

    Great coin.

I know the feeling Caz I am starting to think that WL just has the magic touch. I search and search with no finds and WL jumps on always with "Oh look what I just scored from EBay" and its always at a great price.

Well, he bought it in April so that's why I didn't see it. I started looking on the first.

It's a pretty coin, but misleading to say you paid $30 for it. It was $30 plus $3 for shipping, plus probably around another $40-50 for the PCGS grading, encapsulation, TrueView and shipping/insurance. Still not a bad price I suppose for that "wow" factor, but quite a bit more than your original $30 claim.

By the way, the mintage you reported is for 1942. The mintage of 1941 proofs was 21,100 coins.

$70 is still a good deal, IMO. I'd probably shell out as much as $100-$120 for something like this if I were in the market for a toned wheat cent. I've seen 1941 proofs go for $80+ in this condition and the toning premium is probably at least $20 for people who collect them, probably more.

$70 is reasonable, but $30 is simply not a true reporting of how much it cost him. You can find raw ungraded 1941 proofs if you're patient for around the $40 range no problem. I would probably also pay $70-$80 for the coin in question, but the point is that he has way more than $30 in the coin once you add up the details. That's all I'm saying.

Well, of course. I don't think any attempt to decieve was made. He did state that he sent it to be graded, we all assumed that would cost extra. Still, I would have paid $30-$50 for that coin raw, so it was a good buy either way, IMO.

Agreed, but I'd have to see the coin in hand. Phil Arnold at PCGS TrueView can make Scooby Doo look like Cindy Crawford, so I never know what the coin actually looks like in hand from his pictures.

I think your making more of this then needs to be. WL paid 30 for the coin thats it. An investment was made later by having it graded and photographed. In the end what does it matter what WL paid extra for. The fact is $30 was paid for a beautiful Licoln Wheat Proof. By the way Congrats WL on another beautiful purchase.

Just back from grading and some TrueViews. Six raw Lincoln Proofs, 5 from eBay and one that was in a Genuine holder that I cracked out. All six of the Lincoln's came back with grades. The Genuine crackout received a grade of 66RB.

Here is the former Genuine slabbed Lincoln.

I'm not making anything of anything -- I was simply stating facts. I get the feeling that some of the people here think WL is somehow magically finding these coins. They are not rare, and I think it's misleading for people to say they "bought a raw coin" for a certain price, they then go on to pay 1 or 2 times more to have it entombed and pretty pictures taken. That's all. WL will tell you himself that he has struck out on these kinds of gambles before. HE just doesn't post all of the AT coins here for everyone to oogle over.

As I said, and I will say again, it's a nice coin for $70-$80 which is the true cost WL paid.

Bob, now that is a stunner! So much for PCGS consistency in grading toners for AT/NT genuine status, eh? ;)
