My first impression was that you were trying to shake down the seller. I don't blame him for his response.

I agree. I think you may have gotten a different response from him if your first message simply stated you are fine with the coin at the price, but suggest he list the coins properly in the future, telling him a listing of an 1899 is NOT the same as 1899(not sure of mint).

Sellers are having all kinds of games played with them, feedback blackmail, etc. That is the backdrop your are working against unfortunately. You are technically correct, but your approach sounded fishy.

Understood. I'll just take it as a lesson for the future. I sometimes forget that other people have preconceived notions on motives, etc... that I am trying to overcome. So being more forthcoming / clear in expectation would most likely help. Thanks for the response. I was getting frustrated at myself and almost had the thread deleted. I wasn't meaning to come off as needy or hungry for attention and I am afraid I am coming off that way. I'm just trying to give the "play by play" to this specific "adventure". Hopefully everyone can understand that. I appreciate your input!

Understood sir. We weren't judging your posts, its just like everything in life someone's perception of communication is frequently different than we intend. This is especially true via electronic communication, and even more in a buy/sell situation like Ebay. :)

Good luck, I await the 'assorted US coins'

esp since he says: 1793,1812,1819 and 1851 large cents

    Gasp!

But, none of the designs match the 1793.

oh, well.Probably meant 1796 or something else.

He actually clarified in the "questions" section that it was 1798. That and the half-cent look to be in decent condition based on the pics. Those are the two that I'm excited about. They should arrive tomorrow!

So I got the 9 and 5 coin lots yesterday. Most was to be as expected. The 9 coin lot coins are all in pretty rough shape. It did have an 1835 CB - Half Dime with F-VF details. However, it's beat up pretty bad (Damage + some corrosion). Also, the 1805 Half Cent is a medium 5 (oh well) and most likely in FR2 - AG3 condition. the 1853 half dime, 3cent silver and 3cent nickel are in relatively good shape (VG+) but have a rim nick or a scratch on them. 1865 2cent is in pretty good condition (F+) but has quite a bit of PVC on it. The 1818 large cent looks to be problem free but pretty worn on the reverse. Most likely an AG3. the 1853 cent has nice details (F+) but is really beat up (bent, flat rims in places, scratched). Overall I'll maybe keep 1 or two and sell the rest back on ebay (with better pictures and full disclosure).

The 6 coin lot is actually much better than expected. The seller was pretty dead on about grading and might even have been a bit modest in grade. Only issue I see on any of the coins (besides a little PVC) is a little scratch on the 3cent silver coin. Will most likely keep all of these as they have a nice natural patina tone. Nothing really picture worthy but overall I'm happy with those two auctions. I was expecting a little more from the 9 coin one, but I think I'll probably still make a few bucks selling the problem coins back.

Pretty excited for the book to come today.

I apologize in advance for the blurry pictures. I was trying a new light source method and it doesn't seem to have done much good. Coins aren't nearly as washed out as they appear and I don't think any of the coins have been cleaned.

The 1804 is in great condition, I would grade it F+

The 1798 Large Cent is now the oldest one I have. I would grade it VG+

1861 Trime is in really nice condition. I would grade it VF-EF

1856 Half Dime doesn't look nearly as washed out in person (it almost looks cleaned in the pics). I would say it is in VF-EF condition.

If your going to win auctions for coins you have your heart set on, that will then happen. That is why in general I prefer stores and dealers.

I got a nice little surprise in the book. I have never seen or owned a love token but I feel I lucked out and got a pretty nice one. It is on an 1883 dime and I would say the Obverse is EF. Anyone know what the letters are? HI?

Overall I'm very happy with the book, though a lot of the coins (especially the silver) could use an acetone bath. I hate the old whitman albums because they totally wreck the reverse of some coins. Most of these held up pretty well under the circumstances. I may add more pictures with the EF 1851 Large Cent, the VF 1879 IHC, VG 1875-S 20Cent Piece, AU 1883 No-Cent Nickel, etc.. etc...
