Anyone familiar with NGC grading costs? Need help.

I didn't know what the grades on them were, they look pretty good though. You can't really see it in the pics but there's some nice slight blue tones on both sides of the dollar. I might or might not send them, I don't know yet. I was trying to figure out the payment system they had going first to see what it was going to cost.

I guess I should start filling mine out tonight as well. I've been putting it off for fear of the expense. With the kit they send you, did they send you flips? If so I've managed to lose the ones they sent me. Also just out of curiosity how do you plan on sending yours to them? (and for that matter, how does everyone usually send their coins in?)

 

Pack one coin per flip without staples or labels of any kind. Put them in the order that they are listed on the submission form & wrap an elastic band around the group. Wrap the submission form around the group (assuming a small group of coins). Remember to keep your copy which includes the submission number. Send by the insured method using either USPS or Fed Ex.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Slippinin, but many questions are arising for me tonight while filling out this form.

1. I am sending in 2 coins to get graded and one to get attributed as a variety. I noticed in section 3 where it mentions services and asks you to check one. I assume this would apply to all coins on the invoice. That being said, when you fill in your individual coins, it asks if you want varietyplus or mint error attribution on each coin...so with this being said, can I just check the box there for the one coin and still list the other 2 on the same invoic

2. If 2 invoices are indeed needed, do I have to pay the 19.70 for each invoice (39.40) or do I only mark it on one and only pay 19.70 total for return shipping?

 

Don't worry about it goincarcrazy, ask what you need to. I'm sure whatever questions you have will be useful to me or anyone else reading the thread as well. I didn't even get a kit yet, i must not have made it that far, I just assumed I was supposed to mail them on my own to them.

 

It looks like for the coins i posted pics of to be worth it they need to grade at MS65 or 66 or better, anyone have an opinion on the grade of those 2 coins? I liked the 1938-S and was going to get it graded because the mintage was fairly low, like 15 million. I also wanted to say that i didn't know other places would allow you to submit coins to NGC, I just signed up there because i like their holders the best.

 

To answer my question (with an answer that applies to you slippinin), you wouldn't have to send 2 invoices. only 1, but just make sure you mark the appropriate box on the individual line your coin is on, either "varietyplus" or mint error. So one invoice will work. No extra $8 processing fee!

 

After redoing the invoice and only submitting the one mint error coin, the fee is $75.

That look about right? Seems high.

I'm also still interested to know what some of you think the grades on the other 2 coins might be.

 

Looks about right. Yeah it's certainly pricey. I just sent in the 3 coins I've been wanting to send and the total was something like 129.70. It was a varietyplus Trade Dollar with DDR (so the extra 12.00) and then a 3 cent silver, and a $1 gold, all under the earlybird category. Its a pricey thing, but worth it if you think you have something, and almost essential for errors!

 

I'll probably send mine this week some time. The coin I have wouldn't be considered a varietyplus coin would it? There are other 90* rotated coins, but there aren't any others listed for this year and mint and all that.

 

Anything you want an attribution on is considered varietyplus (the list of varieties they attribute is here http://www.ngccoin.com/vpcategories.aspx). You're right, yours would fall under the mint error category.

 

I was going to say that they aren't weren't grading but after looking at the pic's, I changed my mind.

 

I just have my local dealer submit for me, it's a LOT cheaper to ride along with his coins. He charges me a flat $25 each and all I have to do it drop it off and pick it up at his shop.

 

I would love to be able to do that, but I don't know a single dealer in town that has any regular shipments to any TPG. I wish I did, otherwise I would have taken that route.

I figured that the cost of getting coins graded was expensive. But now that I have read through this thread, I realize that it is freakin redonkulously expensive!!

I've browsed through the TPG's sites out of curiosity. One thing that always struck me as a bit odd was that you had to submit at a different (more expensive) tier depending on the value of your coin. Whats the deal? Is it more difficult to grade a valuable coin as opposed to a cheap coin?

 

And that doesn't include your shipping and insurance to get it there.

I've never understood that. Errors are a specialized field and those who collect them tend to be more studious and can look at the coin and tell what it is. I really can't see why an error collector would need a TPG to tell them what the coin is. It's kind of like saying an early copper specialist needs the TPG to tell him what the variety is. Or a Lincoln cent collector needs them to tell him what the date and mintmark are.

No but their exposure risk is higher and they may take more time with them, or send them out to specialists.

 

I'm sure you look through the error section of this website and see many a novice run through asking if they have an error or not and then see how many post mint damage responses come flooding in. Its just difficult to tell sometimes and yes, there are the experts out there, but relying on selling the errors ONLY to those who know what they're looking at cut out the massive percentage of buyers that are just browsing and come across a curious coin. That's who the slab is really for.

Hey slippinin: out of curiosity, what stage of the process are your coins in? I submitted through an ANA membership so I don't get the benefit of seeing the process, but I can roughly judge from yours. Thanks!

 

I actually keep putting this off for some reason, I'm going to be sending it in this week for sure though. I think what put me off was when I made that invoice it was talking about how the credit card number had to be on at least one invoice, and I was like huh? I thought I could just pay for it there and send it to them, now I'm thinking I'd rather send a money order than write my card number on an invoice and send it someplace. As soon as I get that figured out I'll send it I imagine.

Also, from above, I want to get it slabbed because I'll eventually probably auction it or something, it's a little more trustworthy in a labeled slab that you can just look up at ngc than just seeing it with my pics. I'm not doing anything fishy, but someone could be trying to fool people with random pics, you don't know for sure unless it's slabbed. Just seems more appealing to buy I would think. I don't know if I'll get a lot of them done though seeing as how the price seems super high to me.
