I just try to give an honest answer to that type of post. I realize that some people really don't know what they have. But some who have answered the same questions a thousand times get very arrogant and sometimes angry with those types of posts. I can see why, but I don't know why they bother replying at all.

We idea was to have designated people to reply so people do not get angry and the person can get real answers.

I think that every contributing member of the forum should strive to be an ambassador of the hobby. Therefore, CT does not need designated "ambassadors." If you have knowledge, then share it. I think people often forget what it was like before they knew something. Many of us have been in this hobby for a long time, it's hard to remember what it was like when we were first starting to learn about coins. We should all be respectful to those who are just starting to learn. Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Sometimes it is easy to a "Is this 1950-D penny valuable?" thread for the 100th time and not snap at the person. But again, remember that at one time you didn't know the answer to that question either...and just because it has been asked before doesn't mean the OP knows that.

The key is to treat others just as you would like to be treated...and if you don't want to, then keep your mouth shut.

I like that idea but I'm more considered about people who are here to have use do the work for them. Mainly people who received a collection want us to magically pull out values when they could have done a little searching themselves, then at least come with some concise questions.
I guess no one likes this idea but was worth a shot

The big brothers would be great for people who actually want to learn.

I do like the idea, I just don't understand how it would work. The only way that I can see doing it is have a link to a volunteer under each heading of the forum. Someone who specializes in errors could do errors. An expert in paper money could field paper money questions. World coins and so on.

If you do get this going, I would like to be a part of it. I specialize in early proofs, but I have a decent general knowledge of US coins and grading.

I figured there could be a badge like the mods (to show it is not a scam) and then they could just contact the person and close hen close the thread. It would be on a volunteer I'd imagine

    Ok. Thank you!

Just as a person can not decide themselves to be a mod, neither could a person decide to be an "Ambassador" for the forum. If Peter was to be in favor or such a program, it would be up to him to choose ( appoint) such ambassadors, not for people to volunteer, no matter how well intended their interest is. Numismatic knowledge is very important , but any ambassador is mainly diplomacy, the ability to stand emotionally and rationally above pettiness and repetitive situations and to recognize alternate answers to questions, even though they themselves do not believe it, such as toning, cleaning, etc.

Leave it up to Peter to initiate if he feels it is a good idea. IMO.

I agree it would have to be an "assigned" position.
Maybe ambassador is not the right word.
How bout guide for the non-collector or guide for numismatically-challenged.
I did not know numismatically challenged was a word but it is learn something everyday

Still just a thought. Peter will have to see if he likes the idea which by the general reception seems a no.

Technically, CoinCast, we're all supposed to be ambassadors here........

Green , that is a good comment. Anyone can put " I am here to help the new collectors with their questions, PM me" in their signature area and do the good deed. I tried calling you, but the crank ring didn't work :)

Perhaps a new forum could be created for "What's it worth?/What is this?"
EDIT: Oops, there already is a "What's It Worth?" forum [IMG] - guess people just find it easier to post in this forum.

He has been strangely quiet lately. I guess his hobby ambassador duties are harder than I heretofore imagined! :D

No, it isn't. Moderators are moderators so they can enforce the forum rules.

What most people seem to forget is that Moderators, includingme, are first and foremost members just like all other members. And 99% of all the posts that mods make, are made as them being just members.

For whatever it is worth, I think every member is an ambassador. That includes the newest newbie to the most advanced and longest lived members we have. I can't begin to tell you how many members there are on this forum that I can recall when they were the newbie. And yet today they are often helping others, being the ambassador described in this thread.

My opinion, as a member, is that we don't need to assign the job of ambassador to anybody. That's because everybody, every member can and most often does help somebody else. We are all ambassadors because this is a community, it is YOUR community. Itcan only be what YOU, the members, make of it. And we are all here to help each other, which is what a community does.

I've always had a problem with the saying "treat others as you would want them to treat you". A mentor of mine once pointed out that instead we should "treat people the way that they want to be treated."

I may not want to be treated well and that would never excuse me treating someone else poorly and as well someone could desire to be treated less than well (a murderer, for example) and I would never treat them as I would myself.

A subtle difference, but one that completely changes things.

    Think about it...

we now return to the "ambassador thread"

The problem is some people WANT to be treated like kings or gods.

I have to admit, I do get a lot of resistance from those whom I demand bow before me.
