Definitely not. Looks like it was beat up and polished, probably was in some jewelry thing. The best it would get would be a details grade.
I doubt it. I don't know the the TPG's policies are but I would assume that anything like this where a major change to the make up of the coin is made would result in not being graded. I would be like sewing paper money into a towel and asking for it to be graded.
Thanks for the responses guys but I'm not asking if it would get graded. I know it obviously wouldn't. Just want to know if it would get put into a slab with a label of "ex-jewlery" or "damaged" or anything.
Never seen a genuine gold coin that looks like that , looks like a cast job . That said the damage may have been made by soldering but I kinda doubt it .
It would be extremely hard to determine authenticity because of the heavy damage and polishing. Really it looks plated. I don't think it would get a slab at all, just a body bag.
Because it might be the only way some ever own a gold coin from that era. Having said that I would want it authenticated first - maybe not slabbed, but just a professional authentication. Then I would only pay spot for it - just way to rough. I saw a love token on one of those and it was still priced at 4 or 5k - can't remember. The difference was - the engraving was stunning. No polishing, no damage and very original obverse. If I recall correctly they had 2 had the time one between 10 - 20k and the love token before 4-5k.
If it is authentic, I believe PCGS will slab it as genuine...but it will be labeled as a problem coin. Here are their criteria for that, and I don't see anything that would disqualify this coin. http://www.pcgs.com/nogrades.html
Prove it's real and then pay just spot? So you're saying it's worth melt value? If a coin from that era is significant, then why no premium? It's not for me but okay, maybe for some. Lance.
