I have to order 2 of whatever I want and try to piece together one good one. I just did this- one box was crumpled but had a good coin and the other had a coin with an obverse spot and a good box. I was able to piece one good one together. I have found that about half of what I get from the Mint has a defect so now I just expect it.
Hmm. Do PCGS and NGC grade/slab boxes now? Because I would hate to see an entire set of coins come back slabbed MS70, but have the box in a Details slab...
That's why I never buy anything anymore from the mint. Robots or humans, it makes no difference. What they push out the door to the paying public is shoddy.
you'd think they could bother to at least glance at the coin before they send it out. Quality control is absolutely zero with the mint
That's completely untrue, in my experience. Most of the stuff I get from the Mint arrives in great condition with no problems. They few times I did have a problem, the Mint rectified them to my complete satisfaction.
Been buying from the U. S. Mint for many moon, never sent any back , slabbing is a business & who says their graders know more than us, beauty is in the eye of the beholder , I guess some folks need to pay more $$$$$$$$$ just to say they have the best, its a business
They do. But from the time it leaves the mint there may be 6-8 weeks, maybe more, before the coins ever get to the point that they are ready for distribution. Things can happen in that period of time - like spots developing.
Maybe I am picky but if I get a proof cent with discoloration - well it is a collector item and it just should not be like that. The other ones that are consistently a problem are the "gold" dollars
I agree. After being minted and packaged, the coins are shipped off to the fulfillment warehouse, where they sit for Lord only knows how long before getting shipped to the consumer. The Mint has a LOT of flaws - ugly coin designs, ugly web site, a staff stuffed with incompetent political patronage employees and lately, idiots as Mint Directors. But occasionally they release beautiful coins - the Jamestown commemorative, the St. Gaudens gold eagles, the ASE, the gold Buffalo and the UHR Double Eagle immediately spring to mind. And, usually, orders are shipped promptly and in a sturdy box too. All-in-all I've been satisfied with the items I've ordered from the Mint over the last several decades and will continue to order from them.
I don't have much problem with the Mint. I have had one order short an item which they promptly sent no questions asked. I had one secondary box that was damaged but not bad. Coins and coin package was fine. I do recall about a year or 2 ago, being asked to do a review that asked about packaging. I assume they are working on that. I do think the gold dollars are FUNDAMENTALLY flawed. trying to make gold out of something that is not gold is foolish, pun and truth both intended. I wish they would quit making what I call funny-money and make honest money. No more clad that pretends to be silver and no more what-ever-that-stuff is that pretends to be gold. Since gold dollars are what they are, there will continue to be variation in color, tarnishing, quality, and that is a shame. For the rest of what they do, though, I'm pretty happy. I don't expect every coin to be 70. That's kind of the point that there are only a few that make it to that perfection of 70, and that gives them greater value. And of course the error collectors just can't wait for the next slip up and consider what they pay for them. Considering they produce billions of coins and millions of proofs and mint sets, they look pretty good.
