Perhaps a dumb question...are 'toning' and 'patina' the same thing? I always thought that toning refers to color changes IN the metal and patina refers to material deposited ON the metal, such as dirt or tarnish.
Toning and tarnish are EXACTLY the same thing, and both are "in" the metal not on it. Patina ? Well, that depends on who you ask, and I suppose to some degree it also depends on the particular coin you are talking about. Different people have different definitions that they use for words. But if you look patina up in the dictionary it can be defined as toning, (in the metal), or it can be defined as an incrustation, (on the metal). Either one is perfectly correct.
So, it is a good specimen for the rock tumbler since I agree with you, it's damaged forever. Might as well have some fun with it!
This is what you use these types of coins for after they've been damaged, they make great pieces for watches. :thumb:
