I saw a couple of weeks ago in a post by Green18 of an ASE that he carries. I have a coin that I carry with me everyday and so does my wife. I got to thinking about posting a contest for it and here it goes. The rules are simple. Post a picture of the coin/item you carry with you every day and give me the story as to why you carry that specific coin/item. My kids will pick their favorite one and the winner will get his/her choice of a Jefferson nickel(I have many so you can choose a date/MM) or a 1957 Proof Penny.

I will start it off, even though I can't win.:)

I carry a 1900 - O Morgan Dollar. The reason I carry it is because a long time ago my grandmother gave me a bunch of coins she had hoarded over the years and this is one of them. It is not in the best of shape, but it reminds me of her every time I feel it in my pocket or hear it clank against other change. I also like to take it out and flip it while I am walking or standing around doing nothing at work giving it a lot more dings in it when I miss it and it hits the ground.:) So that's my story, what's yours?

*Duh* I will let it go until Friday 6/15/12 and post the winner on Sunday 6/17/12.

I don't carry a lucky coin, but it sounds like an awesome idea. I might start today!

I'm in the same boat, I don't carry lucky items or coins. But I'm not gonna carry one around either, hard to do when you're not superstitious. ;)

Carrying one to remember someone though isn't a bad idea though.

I have a proof Washington Bicentennial quarter that I found in circulation maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago, if not a bit longer )I posted on the Roll Searchers thread when I found it). I am keeping it in my wallet for the most part, but occasionally I keep in my coin pocket. I starting keeping it around for a few main reasons.

    1) This is only the second proof I have found in circulation, but it is my favorite of the two.

    2) I am a sucker for bicentennial coins. Particularly the quarters and halves. I know they were *****d out, being minted in the tens of millions but I just love the proof and 40% silver coins. I guess everyone has their guilty pleasures and one of mine is the bicentennial proofs and 40%ers.

    3) Since that time, I have found just a War Nickel in circulation. Doesn't sound great BUT I have also managed to be able to store a bit more money away for my coin purchases. Since I found the proof, I have been able to buy 10x more coins than I have in past. Could be circumstance...but maybe not!

It is still in rather decent shape, actually. Still has SOME cameo to it, and doesn't show too much wear. You can definately tell it has seen circulation for a few years, as the fields are rather spotty.

The grey and pink bits of color you see to the right of Washington's bust are my work shirt and my face. Same for the reverse of the coin, but my face is not visible. Goes to show it still has some cameo left! As goofy as it sounds, definitely one of my favorite coins.

I always carry something interesting around to show non-collectors or just to flip when bored. Sometimes it's a 1903 Philippine peso and as I flip it I challenge people that I'll give them either the country of origin or the denomination and if they can guess the one not given then they can have it. Been over a year now and I still have it - nobody puts U.S. together with peso. Sometimes I carry Cuban 20 and 40 centavos dated 1915 and sometimes it's a common date W.L. half dollar just because they're cool looking. Most often I carry these:

1861 British penny and 1881 farthing. My older daughter is named Victoria so I carry the penny for her and the farthing for my little girl.

My lucky coin(s) I carry around is a full roll of Lincoln cents. These I use for trading purposes whenever I see a cash register with some new cents in the tray. I ask if they will swap a new roll of cents for my roll. Sometimes works well, try it.

    Morgan and Simon

I actually carry two "lucky coins" on me at any given time, and each of them has their own purpose.

The first I call "Morgan" and, yes it's the most obvious reason: She is a 1903-CC Morgan Dollar.

Yes, I said that right. A 1903-CC Morgan Dollar.

She's a counterfeit. Sticks to a magnet like glue. :)

Why do I carry around Phoney Morgan? Well, when you're a counterfeit collector, it's always fun to have a piece on you to test the water with. She's great to take to coin shows and get double-takes from and even sometimes fool a dealer or two. It's a really good way to test someone's numismatic mettle (i.e. see how long it takes them to figure out she's fake). Some people look at the year and mint mark and go "You're pulling my leg." Others have to sort through the Gray Sheet and scratch their chin when they don't find her. Some people have even grabbed her with magnets off the bat (and I must say that I was impressed).

The second "lucky piece" I carry around I call "Simon" and that's because he's a 1929 Venezuelan 5 Bolivares. I've always loved Barre's engravings, and he really did Simon Bolivar justice on this coin (although it's not as apparent on my Simon here, he's well worn). :)

Why do I carry him? Well, three reasons really:

First, he's made of silver. A little silver in your pocket is good luck they say.

Second, where he was designed in Paris, France, he was minted here in the US in Philadelphia for Venezuela in the year of the Great Stock Market Crash. Because of that, he reminds me that even during tough times you need to keep in step with your obligations, no matter where they are.

Third, whenever I'm stuck for a choice and can't make up my mind, I give him a flip.

"Hmm... burger or pizza? *Flip---* Simon says pizza." :)

My lucky coin I keep on me is an 1893 columbbian expo half. I got it in better condition and am trying to make it as low as I possibly can to make it a lowball registry coin. I bought it in my local coin club auction and kept it on me ever since. The great part of this coin in my opinion is that my dad was wanting to get it, but I caught him off guard while bidding on it. Now it resides either in my pocket or my wallet depending on what I am wearing. My mom says it leaves a con-dam ring on the wallet, but she knows better.

    K2Coins GO GATORS

This contest sound like a lot of fun! My name is Kyle, I am 15 years old and I have always been fascinated with coins ever since I was little. Every single cent that i ever make goes towards buying coins. When i was little, i don't remember my exact age, i received a 1892-s morgan dollar from my grandfathers brother, he said that it was my great great grandfathers coin that he carried around with him where ever he went. My grandfathers brother told me that he brought it with him when he volunteered to serve in WW1 and risked his life to save other people that were in his platoon and received 4 bronze stars and 2 silver stars. He told him that this coin was the only thing that was able to keep him alive during that war, so he gave it to his son (my great grandfather) when he was drafted into WW2 who carried it with him every single second. When he returned home after receiving 2 bronze stars and 1 silver star he had a 10 children, but gave it to one of his sons (my grandfathers brother) who was later drafted to serve in the Korean war where he also received 2 bronze stars and one silver star for infiltrating a Japanese fort. He also believed that this coin was able to keep him alive and always had someone looking over him when times were hard. Now, this coin has been handed down to me and it means everything, there is so much history behind it with my family that it makes it priceless. I carry this coin around with me no matter where i go and no matter what i do. Here are pictures:

I carry a 1972-D Ike dollar around with me. It was given to me by my Grandmother and I started carrying it around as a good luck charm in law school. Now that I'm a lawyer, I still carry it with me. I like it because, when I'm sitting at counsel's table and opposing counsel is arguing or examining a witness I like to flip it between my fingers and, because its pretty big, it can be a little bit of a "distraction" to the jury. :) Anything to keep their attention off the argument!

I got this piece as a child from a bank teller (mid 1980´s) and have carried it since. It´s a Finnish version of Scrooge McDuck´s lucky coin so what could be better item in this purpose :D. It was shiny and uncirculated when I got it...

Hello! I being from Romania, my coind is a Romanian one :

    - 37 mm diameter, 25 g, silver 83.5%, copper 16.5%, flat edge; incuse on the edge: "PRIN STATORNICIE LA IZBANDA", meaning THROUGH FAITHFULNESS TO VICTORY
    - denomination "500 LEI", inscription MOLDOVA·LUI·STEFAN·IN·VECI·A·ROMANIEI that is STEPHEN'S MOLDAVIA FOREVER ROMANIAN and Stephen the Great and the Holy consecrating a church.

Coin belonged to my grandmother born in 1914, that left us this year. The coin was used by my grandmother when she was young. She kept some and gave them to her grandchildren.
The coin as seen, is pretty big. So i love to flip it, the coins in Romania today, are very small so when I play with it through my fingers,it immediately attracts attention ( because people do not understand what coin is). Sometimes I am even asked if the National Bank issued a new coin:)

I carry like 5 or 6 coins in little gumball machine holders everywhere. I do so for the chance to teach others about collecting. I have a barb, a merc, an 1883 no cents V-nickle, a steel penny, and at the momment, a memorial cent with a hole through it right through where lincoln's eye should be. That one is so I can "look through lincoln's eyes" I also usualy have an ike.

    My Lucky Coins

I always carry two coins with me. The first one is a "lucky coin" that I received free from a bank. I always seem to have good luck when it is with me, so I try not to leave home without it.

The other coin is a 1790 Dutch East India Company Duit. It is the same coin that was used to purchase the Island of Manhattan from the Native Americans (or so the story goes). I carry it around with me because who else can say they have 222 year old coin on them. It is just amazing to think of the history of the coin and if it could only talk!!

My mom gave me this 1945 s penny as a gift. My sister and I both love this coin because it's the thing that got us collecting and now we both have our own type of coin collection. I collect U.S., coins and my sister collects coins with cats on them.

Although I don't think anyone can beat K2Coin's story, I'll try. A few years ago before I was as interested in numismatics as I am now I was sitting on the beach one night watching my little cousins play. Being pretty bored I started digging around in the sand and I found a penny. I was about to throw it back in the sand but I noticed it was an old wheat cent so I decided to keep it. When I got home later on I noticed the color was weird but I just thought it was from being in the sand for a long time. The next day I looked at it closer and noticed it was minted in 1943, I remembered reading that they minted cents out of steel during WWII but I couldn't remember exactly what year. So I walked over to the fridge, grabbed a magnet, and it stuck. Put it back into my wallet, where its been ever since.

    silentnviolent accumulator--selling--make an offer I can't refuse

That coin is in much better shape than I expected after all the action it's seen. Keep it close!

I'm kind of absent minded.... I used to carry an old bronze Chinese 10 cash coin after research showed it was used to bring luck and health to the sick. They would string a bunch of them together through the center hole, forming them into the likeness of a sword to be hung over the bed of the inflicted. But alas, I lost it. I hope it brought someone good luck....

I carry this with me when I play poker, though. It usually turns a few heads, and can be a great distraction!
