The 1861 quarter eagle I posted about 5/21 has been graded. It is real and graded a ms 62 from icg. I thought it would grade higher, but after all the ( I think its fake) responses I got from the forum I was worried. I am still happy with what I paid for the coin and it is a pretty coin. Thanks to all who had a guess, I have some more I will be posting.
That would be a great find and congrats to you. Without pics ill take your word because if its not as you say the only one being hurt will be you. When growing up a mans word was his bond but now days showing proof is the only thing some will except and its because in todays world a lie isnt as bad as it was when i was a kid. Again congrats.
You should read this in it's entirety: http://www.cointalk.com/t206688/ These are pre-submission photos:
I will post pics after work about 6 30 pm eastern. Man this tough crowd. What would i have to gain its not for sale. Just thuoght I would share a find and maybe show thetr is still some nice finds out there.
That is true...but they aren't nearly as reputable as PCGS or NGC. There are a lot of collectors who consider any coin not in a PCGS or NGC slab to be raw...and any concerns they have about the coin are treated as if it were a raw coin. ANACS and ICG are not as reputable as they once were. Not even being close to an expert on these coins, I have no ability to comment on the grade or authenticity.
I agree in part.I have never used Icg. but Anacs I have. then a year or 2 latter had Ngc regrade them 4 of the 5 I had regraded came back with the same grade and a fee for Vam details/Anacs did that free Ngc+ Pcgs won't . only 1 was 1 graded lower.
It looks good to me and that's why I don't collect gold. Too many fakes for too many years. I don't use ICG but feel they would catch a fake. Interesting coin.
I hear what you are saying but what good does that do if the general public doesn't have faith in Anacs and therefore if/when you go to sell you may not get the money you were expecting.
The consenus is ICG overgrades by at least a grade, possibly two: http://www.cointalk.com/t206574/ And I don't feel their counterfeit detection is up to standards, especially when it comes to quarter eagles. Many high quality fakes having been domestically produced over the years using low grade double eagles as a base material.
If that $2.5 is real, how did it only get a MS62? I've got a PCGS $2.5 MS63 that isn't that clean (Though mine does have luster).
And that's a mighty big "if" in my book. No one will convince me (from those pics anyway) that this coin is genuine.
Most of the time they would; but not as often as NGC or PCGS. Quarter eagles are among the most difficult to detect, and some do slip through. I could be totally wrong on this particular coin, but I'd still like to see a pic of the slab.
