I was surprised that auction went up to $90+. I have an aversion to items offered by Great Southern Coin -- as their pictures are notoriously doctored and misleading. I wish you the best of luck with your submission for grading.

This one is on its way. Should kind of make up for those other Kennedy halves that were a disappointment. Nice cameo reverse on this one!

 

+1. Though not surprised on the price, there's so many suckers (not including you, WL ) who constantly bid on GSC's heavily altered pictures! The pictures don't even look natural...

 

This is a new addition that arrived today for my typeset.

 

1917 Lincoln Cent. I didn't realize how much controversy this coin would precipitate when I posted it! I will be sure to let you all know how PCGS grades this Lincoln either way. (I will post results in this thread). I should probably know in about a month. To my eye this coin looks great (however I am not above being fooled!).

I will say this, I have examined hundreds of spectacularly toned coins in hand ... and this 1917 Lincoln is one of the better ones I've seen in terms of being both beautiful and believable (i.e.natural looking) -- and I feel fairly confident (perhaps 75% to 80% sure) that PCGS will grade this one. (However, I have been wrong before.)

This was certainly well worth $90 to me (that's chicken feed). If it grades, I got a huge bargain.

I did want to share that I got GSC to give me a money back guarantee that if PCGS Genuines the coin, they will refund my $90. That is about as an air-tight guarantee as I've ever gotten from an ebay seller. Most will only give you a few days to send a coin back for a refund. Honestly even without that money back guarantee, I would have rolled the dice on this coin for 90 bucks.

Here is a good comparison shot. Posted below is an iPhone photo that I shot in indirect sunlight in my house ... comparing the raw 1917 Lincoln that I bought from GSC with a PCGS-graded MS65BN 1935-D Lincoln. The 1917 was placed directly on top of the PCGS slab so the lighting and camera angle is really close to identical on the two coins. I think this gives a really good look of how great and how natural the 1917 appears to be. (Note the great perimeter coloration and the nice luster on the 1917). I really do think this 1917 is going to grade at PCGS -- I am guessing a MS65+BN -- but I wouldn't fall over in my chair if this graded MS66BN (I can't see any reason why this wouldn't achieve a 66 grade, but PCGS is sticky on handing out 66's).

It's funny that to my eye this 1917 does remind me a bit of a Matte Proof Lincoln, though I know that's impossible due to the 1917 date (and the rim is not wide enough or sharp enough) -- still it sort of has some (Matte) proof-like qualities. This is just a stunning, well-struck beauty with some striking, colorful target toning -- probably from being in an album for many decades.

Winged, that's a great-looking '17 Lincoln but I have to agree with brg5658: you're taking your chances with Great Southern. They're notorious for selling over-dipped (and otherwise cleaned) coins—I speak from experience. They sell a lot of raw stuff because they know it won't grade. Their graded coins are photographed to look way better than they are. I am amazed that they don't receive more negs.; apparently people have bought into their spiel. They do so much quantity that occasionally they sell a decent piece. You may have gotten lucky with this one—since it's toned—but I'd be careful with them! (Smart on your part to get the guarantee; again, GS does so much business they can indulge the occasional careful buyer.)

I've heard the same negative comments about GSC.

I think WL has caught a lucky break with this beautiful 1917 and fallen into a pot of gold. I know it's tough to get a good read through photos.

Based on WL's in hand description and photos of the coin I feel he has a real winner.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it come back MS66BN. I'm really looking forward to seeing the TrueView.

There have been a multitude of threads on the existence of a 1917 MPL. The overwhelming consensus is that they just don't exist. Just like the 1910 VDB.
