I have read many threads speaking to the fact that our modern coins are not nearly as beautiful as they once were. I can not agree more, our coins are stale and lack the artistic expression that once graced American coinage. So lets see if we can help.

The contest. Design your own coin for circulation. There are no guidelines that must be followed, just have fun and see what you can come up with. Draw it on a napkin, cut out images and paste them on construction paper, use the latest high tech imaging software, whatever. Post your design on this thread and if you like, a story behind the design.

There must be at least ten submissions for the contest to be valid. I will give one month for all entries (contest will end on July 5, 2012) and we will vote on the winner. The winner will receive a BU Morgan dollar.

Here is my feeble attempt. I hope that mine gets blown away, but in the unlikely event that it doesn't, mine is ineligible.

Good luck and get to work. :smile

There is one rule. If you do not like someones design, keep it to yourself. But by all means, complement the ones that you do like.

My entry 2013 British One Pound coin :):

There is some really nice looking city coins in circulation (London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh) so my idea is why not put them all together, it is the United Kingdom..
Hope you like it :D, I would recommend if drawing do it on a big page like A4, I done mine on a memo block which I found it hard to get in much detail
Great idea for a contest can`t wait to see other entries
    Thanks

I love it. I was wondering if anyone would attempt doing one. And that is a beautiful series.

Here is my short attempt at designing a gold coin. I just cut and pasted a few photos. the original coin is a $3 gold coin. then I pasted a bust of the greek goddess Minerva.
then I pasted "IN GOD WE TRUST" & " E Pluribus Unum "

all photos I found on the Web

Yes, my coin is egg-shaped because it is VERY hard to draw a perfect circle free-hand.

Sure, why not? I love artsy contests. :D

Here's my entry. Nothing special, basically a modernized reworking of the draped bust design (my favorite of them all) with elements of the Capped Bust and Peace dollar design . Can you spot what came from where? ;)

Lady Liberty needs to make a comeback on our money. The reverse would have an Eagle, the denomination (dollar, probably), "United States of America," and of course the other 25 stars. :p

Angel, the crown for sure came from the Peace dollar.

I would have drawn Liberty but I SUCK at drawing people AND I could not think of a pose for Liberty that would not have been too much of a knock-off of a Saint Gaudens, Walking, Standing liberty etc.

    Very nice entries so far!

Here's mine. The front has the flag on it, along with the date, stars, and "In God We Trust".
The reverse has 5 cents, with the mint mark below it (Takes after the buffalo nickel). The reverse also features Washington, Lincoln, Franklin, and Jefferson with the words "Our FOUR Fathers". I do realize I spelled Fore the wrong way, but it makes the coin humorous. This was a lot of fun; good luck everyone! I made this in paint :)

Round coins are overrated anyway. I do see some nice toning developing. +1

Now, how big's it gonna be? I think it would even be nice if you filled it with zinc and gave it a thin layer of silver. But now i am dreaming...

great! now you have put his name in the tread! What if he searches himself?!? Now there is a very small chance that he will come to cointalk and not see it!

I wonder if I can even come up with a design worth being on paper, much less the internet:eek:

good luck those of greater skill than me:D

I like the idea of getting back to patriotism and symbolism on the coin that people can identify with. I took a picture of Columbia from an old magazine cover, to replace Roosevelt on a dime, and then updated the reverse with a flag and eagle, and a different way of putting the mottos, etc.

I did realize that, he of course is welcome. I love his work on his fantasy coins. I still need to get one of his 64 Peace dollars and I see there are two on eBay at the moment. You just cost me a couple bills.

Columbia? Looks a lot like Mary Pickford to me.
I've never been a big fan of the colorized coins....
    Just kidding.

  19. Kasia

Kasia Got my learning hat on

Nah, it's not colorized. Just a plain old clad like we have now (You have to imagine what it would look like as a dime). Just I am not good at drawing so I took the pics I liked. And the picture may have been based on Mary Pickford. The wonderful thing about an allegorical figure is you can make it after the images you want. And sadly, I would have liked to put slightly longer hair on her, but again my artistic talents are pretty low. But I really liked the crown. I thought it would look great on a dime.

Get working on it....I want to see what you come up with...

I was just kidding about the colorized part. I knew what you were going for.
What old magazine cover did you grab the image from? I'm just curious.
