Beachbum, the denticles look a bit off in that pic, but can't really tell. Like Elbesaar said, it has no life to it. It's very dull for an XF, and that could be because it is fake. ALso, if the surfaces looks granular, it's probably a cast fake. I'm assuming that's what you mean by "bubbling".
Here's a '16-D that I just got (Not my pics) and I think it may be a D/D as well. I'll post them when I get it.
1900-S Barber Half XF This is my first Barber. I purchased it off of eBay for $185. It seemed like an OK deal.
If that 13-S is a fake, I agree with whoever said it was a good one. Damn good, in fact. Here's a Barber that I'll add to the image list:
Alright just a question on 1 that would fit in my set but didnt meet reserve and its wayyyyyy over pcgs guide. Whats so special about this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I bid on a nicer 1905-O in PCGS 50 last week - my MAX bid was $1359 - and I had $1459 ready to go if there was any activity within the last few moments before the auction was over... someone waited until the very last conceivable second to place a live bid [ he assured me it was not a snipe bid ] and we discussed it at PCGS Barber Thread. The VF 35 you posted for $505 that did not hit reserve isn't all that attractive [ IMHO ] but if it were similar to say this coin ... then I would be prepared to spend $1200. A $505 bid would buy you a nice VF 20-25 with nice eye appeal.
In the end I guess it's supply and demand, registry sets and just tough date/mm combinations - however - if you take alook at some of the bigger barber dealers/sellers on ebay and check out their histories you will see that they are perpetuating the "way over pcgs guide" trend that you're seeing. There are a few of them where you can see they bought BIN coins as soon as they were listed and then within a week or so had the exact coins relisted in their stores for way more money. 05-O is tough though - I've yet to see one as nice as the ones popping up online
Got a refund for my Barber dime last Thursday..spent $200 on 1/10 gold maple leaf with the Viking privy mark. Viking privy mark has the mintage of only 850! Money well spent!!!!
Just found the old image of a coin I sold - and repurchased from the buyer - six months ago... It now has a Green Bean...
just got these in today.. picked em up for melt.. my first barbers.. nothing like all the other coins in the thread
Saw a lot containing both of the below Barber dimes and posted a thread determining if the top was cleaned...someone decided it was market acceptable. It was at a decent price so I picked it up. Hopefully they'll look great in hand!
I had three reputable dealers (Bob Patchin's Coin Gallery, Manny at Huntington Beach Coin Exchange and the guys at Penny Lane) and numerous coin experts tell me that it was fake and to request a refund. When over 12 coin experts look at it and tell you something fishy, I would listen.
I posted this over at the PCGS forums, but the same applies here. I've learned a lot here as well. Well, today was the day I liquidated my collection of halves. In light of house hunting, and with a new baby on the horizon, I felt it was the best use for the money I had tied up in my coins. I did keep a few of my Barbers because I just couldn't let some of them go, but the bulk of my collection will help build other collectors' sets in the coming days. I would just like to thank a lot of you for your help, expertise, criticism and overall wealth of knowledge you share in this thread and many others. A lot of people from this thread helped shape me into the Barber collector I am today and that is much appreciated. I will still be lurking around, and I may pick up the occasional piece here or there. Again, thanks all and happy hunting. Justin
