I am new to coins and have heard this term, "numismatic", talked about from time to time. Can someone explain that to me please? Thank you.
does it have something to do with this MS and PR ratings that I have seen on ebay....I saw a coin with MS69 and PR69 -- not sure if thats a good or bad rating though.
also detailed scale is here: http://www.acoin.com/grading.htm http://www.coinadvisor.com/blog/coin-grading-using-the-sheldon-scale/ http://coin-college.com/Sheldon-Scale.html Enjoy!
Numismatic has to with the study of production, and the collection of coins and currency, both U.S. and world countries.
Just like BU said. Hense, comes the word, numismatist. A numismatist is a person who studies Numismatics. Among coin collectors, the term numismatist is used when someone is serious about their coin collecting for a living.
Yeah..... I'm truly, very sorry. I was only writing what has been preached to me from numismatists with over 10+ years in the biz. I've only collected coins for over 14 years and so I guess I am only a "coin collector" not a numismatist. Man.... those preachers sure gotta stop saying a person not in the biz is only a coin collector. As a matter of fact, I don't know what category I fall in as I have nothing but about 10 coins and give out more than what I add for my Danscos. But thanks for the lesson. I truly appreciate learning from others.
You've been listening to a lot of wrong people. I know eople in the coin business who are a far cry from being numinatists. They buy and sell, but thats as far as their interest in coins goes. They are not numinatists. I buy and sell stocks, but I don't call myself a stock broker. Guy
Yup, I was always under the impression that a person who was a Numismatist was a person who studied coins or was a serious collector of coins, tokens, or currency.
I would say even that every coin collector who learns continously about coins he/she collects IS numismatist. Let's not be so strict with it. As coleguy said, a lot of self-called "numismatists" focus only on coins as a business, without any knowledge.
OMG :foot-mouth: So... I understand you are buying and selling coins, and you do not spend so much time learning about them. Hmm... you have to be a coin dealer. This is the word matching the best for me. Coin dealers are also very important for collectors
No... not really. I'm not a dealer either. I don't even have coins, except for the ones I give out.... Interesting. Maybe I'm just a simple, low class coin collector, that's all. Oh, and thanks for the foot in the mouth.
Hehe, just to be sure - foot in the mouth was for me only, sometimes I should think twice before I write something
