Check out these strange marks. This looks like it happened when the coin was struck. They do not appear to be your normal PMD, contact mark, or anything like that. Any thoughts? Just curious.
Gotta admit it's weird, never seen anything like it. But I can't think of anything else that could possibly cause marks like that.
Die gouges? Really?! How exactly how do die gouges produce lines that are incused into the coin (instead of raised lines like all other die gouges)? And how do you explain the straight-line "die gouge" that marked Kennedy's cheek and nose but somehow missed the higher portion of the die between his cheek and nose (which is lower on the coin)? If it was really die gouges there should be some more examples with the exact same marks. This is PMD all the way.
I always assume PMD before anything else. These just look so 'perfect', I thought it was something that happened when it was struck. Is it possible there could have been some debris on the die? Either way, it's interesting looking. Here is an Ike dollar with neat looking damage. Looks like his ear was sewn back on.
It looks likes die problem. Are the lines raised on the coin? It's kind a cool looking--JFK going punk/goth with piercings. Norma Jean would be impressed. You might try contacting CoinWorld Collectors Clearing House. Don't send it to them without contacting them first.
I actually don't know. I didn't even see them until I was editing the image. I will check it out tonight and take a few more shots with different lighting.
There's a line going through the mouth and turning down at nearly a right angle. And that part, the part turning down, looks raised. At least to my eyes anyway.
Hello gbroke, The marks look like simple nicks into the coin. Of course, if you check & find that they are raised, then you have something like what GDJMSP mentioned. Remember that when you have a deep nick, the displaced metal needs to go someplace & you may find some raised areas around the nick. (Much like the edges of an impact crater on the Moon).
