I have a nice coin coming in tomorrow that I have been pursuing for sometime but in the mean time I have been giving the 1908 Saint Wells Fargo Gold some serious thought here are some examples that I have found so far on various sites on the web since I live in Nevada I like the label that has that included
You know if you self slab one it's cheaper Just saying The Wells Fargo hoard is cool and all But when I found out there was approximately 19,900 coins in that hoard. Kinda lost the luster.
Everything is good on this one except for the scuff above the eagles head thats a deal breaker for me on this particular one the 65 actually looks way better then the 66
I wish it had the right label found the 67 for $7,400, if I can find anything on line I am sure there will be some good choices at the Long Beach Coin Expo in early February, really looking forward to that
Since there are NO RAW 1908 No Motto Wells Fargo coins out there, that would be difficult. They were ALL (to my knowledge) graded by PCGS, though they were sold over 3 different time periods. It didn't pay to NOT have them all certified; the premium for the grade and the hoard story were worth it even with gold and coin prices depressed in the mid-to-late 1990's. That's part of the attraction. If the Hoard were very small, it'd probably be out of most people's price range. In fairness, the term "Wells Fargo" has nothing to do with the origins of the coins/hoard. That is known only to the sellers and the buyer, Ron Gillio. He's never disclosed WHERE they came from; the WF moniker is where the coins were stored when they were doing the transaction. Most people probably think they are associated with the Old West and Wells Fargo stagecoaches. They could have been a military junta's stash....a general's mistress....some corrupt politicians....or just honest bank and trade settlements. We just don't know. They totaled 80 bags of the standard 250 coin Double Eagle bag.
You forgot Saudi or Arabian Prince. It doesn't even say Hoard on the label. If mpcusa got a RAW 1908 No Motto he could call it whatever he wanted on the label.
It says Wells Fargo. That was the hoard...you don't need the word "hoard" on it to know it was part of The WF Hoard. Do you need the word "collection" after "Simpson" to know it's part of the Simpson Collection ? But such a coin doesn't exist and without the label provenance there IS NO PROOF that it can trace the lineage that way. Otherwise, folks can make up any story about their raw coins to up the value.
I think we got derailed someplace. If I saw a label that said Simpson, I'd have to look that up to see what the Simpson represented. Don't get me wrong I know what the WF label represents. I he had a poll I'd vote for the Green Holdered slab.
The OGH is the way to go....is the original holder for the 1st batch graded. If you see an MS-66 or below in anything OTHER than an OGH, it might have been cracked out since the 1st batch graded were the lower-graded coins. The other 3 holders above look like they are from 2011, 1998-2000, and 2011-12.
