http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131221&lotNo=28867#Photo This is an example of CAC being etterly useless. This is one ugly $1000 coin which, IMO, is also misgraded.
I think the coin is accurately graded. I don't care for the toning...but that doesn't really factor into the grade. So, I would say the grade is accurate which is why it got a sticker.
I wouldn't call it overgraded, but it sure doesn't have what I would call great eye appeal. But CAC stickers are by no means useless. I wish that CAC would grade and slab coin, but Mr. Albanese has already traveled that road and apparently does not want to again.
No it isn't. A 66 should not have all those marks on the focal points of the legs and such and the toning is JUNK. 66's are supposed to have good eye apeal. But hey, if you want to drop over a grand for it, have fun.
Just a quick look and there are 13 hits up and down her leg, neck and body. This coin was attacked by Jack the ripper.
And this is not a 66 and i question if it is full head. This is a 75,000 dollar purchasing decision http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?inventoryNo=200240014#Photo
AGREED! I think that coin is overgraded by NGC grader! Too ugly in my eyes compare the real 66 that you show. CAC sticker is just only decoration on that slab..Color is GREEN means GO AHEAD BUY IT! URGHHHHH!
Sure looks like a lot of hits for a 66. Could any of that have been there before the coin was struck? Maybe the luster gave the coin a bump. Interesting coin.
Looks more like a 65 to me, but I don't think the coin is that ugly. Some folks (not me) like that kind of toning. Definitely appears overgrazed--65 tops.
I agree the coin is over-graded. Ugly toning, too many hits on focal points, low eye-appeal. MS65 at best. How it got a CAC sticker shows me the uselessness of CAC, except as a marketing tool for those unable to properly grade coins themselves.
There might be the need for a company that would verify the quality standards of CAC. It could put a sticker over CAC sticker, providing 200% confidence in the quality of a coin. Think I`ll open it, gonna call it SHMAC.
A Beautiful Specimen!! I believe that an informed TPG grading "technician" should have these archival images available at their fingertips, to use as a basis for this type coin, in this "FH" grade. I believe the items linked in posts #1 (1977 A.N.A. MS65 Tech. Spec. "Has full mint luster") and #7 ( "Full Head"? $75,000?) may qualify for the "What Were You Thinking?" overgrading award. I feel that those examples may relatively qualify as evidentiary specimens for a possible redress action discussed in another post. Just my humble, possibly un-informed, opinion. :thumb:
The responses in this thread are evidence of only one thing, that nobody here has ever collected premium gem SLQ's. That coin is properly graded and the toning does not have negative eye appeal. Just because a coin doesn't have attractive toning, doesn't mean the toning detracts from the grade. More often than not, toning is neutral with respect to grade and that is the case here. Furthermore, if you didn't have access to the oversized photo, you wouldn't be able to see the 13 minuscule marks on the coin. Graders don't use oversized photographs to grade coins. They look at the coin in hand and might use a 5X loupe for closer inspection. Lastly, not one person mentioned luster which is probably the most important element of grading in the premium gem grades. I promise you that if JA gave this coin a sticker, the luster is booming. We can't see that from a photo. Don't like it? Don't buy it! After reading my post, look at the slab photos again and apply objective reasoning rather than a predisposed hatred towards TPG's and CAC. As a collector or premium gem SLQ's, just my humble, very informed, opinion.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the founder of CAC wan't he also a founder of NGC? Perhaps CAC should have a Black Bean for over graded coins.
So we are to take Ruben's word (based on a crappy heritage photo no less) over the words of CAC and NGC? I like you Ruben, but not that much. You can't grade coins accurately via pictures, particularly high-end mint state coins where in-hand luster and eye appeal decide much for the grade.
A - wrong That coin is GROSSLY misgraded and YOU would not want that coin with that tone. That isn't one of your fancy peach colors toned coins with rainbow stripes. That is a coin with an obstructive rusty tone that prevents a good look at the coin and is ugly. Yes it does at MS66. In fact, MS66 is the first grade that specifically requires strike and eye appeal to be accounted for. That is a substandard strike, with rotten eye appeal and generally I wouldn't want it for $10 let alone $1000 No. i have coins that exactly photgraph like that and look like garbage and they are graded MS 67. This Merc for example which is an MS 67 And this coin looks like vomit in the hand, really. You can't even see its details. The coin is Dreck and should at max be a MS 64 just based on the hits alone. Sorry that my opinion is not Humble. This Posting is now categorized as "CAC is God" and "I hate TPG", either or. Ruben
