I have a 2004 Silver Proof Set. Hypothetically if I sent that in to a TPG to be graded, would they crack open the plastic holders that my proof coins are incased in? If so, do they all get slabbed together or individually? Just curious how that works. I ask because I have my eye on a 1999 proof set and that is something I would want graded once I got it, but I would rather send it in in a lot. Also, I have never sent anything in before. Thank you for your time! --Rob.
I believe they will crack it open and charge a fee for cracking it because they aren't in vinyl flips.
It never hurts to call and ask. This way you'll be sure to submit it properly and there'll be no surprises. They'll also tell you the costs. I have never been charged extra to crack a set but YMMV. Lance.
It is nearly imposable to get a matching grade set. Unless you are really confident that you will get a PR-70 matching set, I say just purchase a set already graded. It will probably be cheaper to buy a PR-69 set than sending in the set yourself.
I agree. I will add that NGC will remove the coins from OGP at no extra chaarge. If you want the OGP returned, it'll cost $3 extra. The coins will be slabbed individually.
NGC used to do a multi coin slab. All the quarters in one large slab and the other coins in a large slab. Not sure they will still do this. I'm thinking PCGS played with this but quit. In separate slabs for each coin the 1999 set would probably cost about $200 in fees and postage. They would probably come back graded 67 to 69. Maybe one or two in a 70 holder. Big maybe. If I wanted to have this set in holders, I would buy them that way and forget about sending them in.
Don't forget that if you are not already a member there is membership fees also. And yes they will open OGP but all items must be submitted for grading.
