Box drilled for nonpayment, cleaned out, rekeyed and sold to someone else. Doesn't explain how he was able to open it with his key though.
Banks FICA insured that have safety deposit. also must keep video up to 36months of everything so this theft should be on video somewhere.a few cameras could have been turned off,but then CPU record that to. But an inside job like this could be well hidden. I check my 2 box's Monthly.
i don't either. now that most want to charge a monthly fee just for walking in to cash a paycheck, even if you have an account, I'm an inch from demanding cash payments every payday. :veryangry: Thank God for the local Credit Union.
All of this of course boils down to probability and risk assessment. What's more likely, a house fire/home invasion or a group of mobsters drilling into your SDB? I think I know the answer. Having said that, I check my box monthly.
I've been fairly happy with the First Internet Bank of Indiana. I can honestly say they never took a dime from me. Of course that has nothing to do with safety deposit boxes. Ruben
This is the romanticized version of SDB theft. Souds more like a salespitch than an argument... TRUST NO ONE.
Well any private SDB place would make me nervous. I would prefer having a large bank who has a lot more to lose than my account if they we found to have poor security in SDB's. A private vault place is not neessarily regulated by state and fed banking regulators. Regarding someone mentioning a "master key" I don't believe so. If they had such things why would they have to have them drilled if you lose your key? I believe by law the locks installed on these aren't allowed to be mastered. Is it foolproof? Nothing in life is unstealable, but I still believe offsite SDB at a bank is safer than home safes or private SDB companies. Burying is a great idea, (and used by people for thousands of years), but again, if you die your family gets nothing and in 500 years someone will dig up your stuff and sell to collectors just like today.
Should be more worried about government taking it (tinfoil time) read up on Operation Rize when UK Police seized SDBs and unless you can fully prove the content is yours you are out of luck....
On a similar note, I never use a seat-belt, because it might prevent me from being thrown to safety in an accident.
