I wish CoinTalk had a "Coin Photography" separate forum. This kind of discussion just makes me giddy inside. OK, again, sorry to hijack this thread, hopefully I'll have a NEWP to post tonight. Thanks for all of the discussion and replies everyone. And, Bob, I agree that coins have many looks. But the "TrueView" is misleading in the sense that it tries to show in one image what is impossible to do. I know it's a lose-lose situation. If Phil imaged the coins flat on, people would complain the other way around.
"Enhanced" to me means the colors are not what you'd normally see unless something extreme is done to the viewing angle and/or lighting. The top image here is an accurate representation of this $T. The bottom is "enhanced" by extreme lighting and doesn't look like the coin. It would be a sham to show this image, were I to sell the coin. I doubt we'll come to a meeting of the minds. We should probably move this discussion to another area, or kill it. This is the wrong thread. Apologies for abusing it. Lance.
Actually, that would be the perfect solution. We all know that Phil takes a few, if not several, images of each coin. On coins where it is applicable, he should issue two TrueViews. One straight down version and one "enhanced" version. Either photo would be correct, since under certain lighting conditions, the actual look of the coin is being shown. But if only one TrueView is released, being a toner lover, I would want the one that shows what the colors look like under the lights. I can also respect the wishes of those that prefer not to have that look.
This one came today. I'm also adding a close-up of the reverse design to show the details of the Promontory Golden Spike Ceremony (and two additional really tiny horses!)
Well, here is my latest pickup from Ebay. I plan on liberating it from it's rediculous MS70 SGS slab so that it can live in my uncirculated Dansco...
I got this "hobo" from a friend recently. Never seen a carved up $3 gold piece before and I imagine there aren't too many folks out there that would even think of carving a $3 gold piece. But this piece was apparently a good candidate for it as it already had a hole anyways. I thought it ended up pretty neat looking and it's actually the first $3 gold piece I've ever owned.
That is a gorgeous War Nickle! I wish I had one that looked half as good as yours! Nothing picture-worthy for me today. I snagged 6 XF Washingtons and a '31 Merc.
Thanks! I think its nice especially for that cheap! I like the subtle toning on the top of the reverse. It looks like clouds over Monticello!
A friend ATS offered me this tough CBH variety. It's a curl base 2, knob. I guess that doesn't mean much unless you collect redbook varieties. It's hard to find. It doesn't have crazy color or flashy luster. Just an original, crusty, dirty grey/brown look. Nice surfaces and detail. I think I'll keep it. Lance.
These lovely ladies arrived today. Nothing spectacular, but just some nice mercs and very inexpensive.
Oh man. I hate that feeling. It only happened once to me. Even though they sent me a check, the pain never healed. My condolences Merc.
Yeah, it was a nice '44-S, 66FB, CAC'ed. Got what I thought was a great price on it too. The seller has already agreed to refund me in full.
That was several years ago. I should grab one again and play with one but I doubt the time will come this year due to travel.
