Wanted to get some thoughts re: grade and Overton number on two Capped Bust Halves, a '21 and a '29.

    Here is the '21:

    And here is the '29:

Also, do you think that these would be coins that would be worth picking up. Thanks everyone!

That 1821 just looks off either tooled or a fake I think. Notice how different the hair in front of the ear is and the profile of the face is different around the chin.

Edit to add image of my graded one to compare with.

    The '21 is an O-106 R1 and the '29 is an O-119 R2
The '21 looks a bit beat up and I'd put it at VF details. The '29 looks much cleaner and I'd give it a low XF.

I am fairly certain both coins are genuine but as LindaDad said, the '21 might have been tooled.

What is the consensus here on an eBay seller by the name of GSC Great Southern Coins?

I knew they were GSC pics. They are probably details coins and going for too much. If you are unsure, look for a nice one in a slab to get the hang of it.

I am very glad they put a company logo in each title picture because I know to not bother looking further.

GSC is known for "improving" images to make their coins more appealing, and for hype. But they do have a return policy and apparently are good about taking care of refunds timely, including return shipping. This has helped keep their feedback rating decent. (31 neutrals, 4 negs from 40,000 sales in the last year. Also, 65 "revised feedback".)

They appear to sell to less experienced collectors. Every savvy one I know stays far away.

Ditto what Lance says. Also you can search on great souther coins here and find several threads on them. I don't trust their pictures and if I don't trust pictures I stay away. Just my opinion.

Agreed about the opinions on GSC, but I still think the '29 is a decent piece :)

I agree. Even a busted clock is right twice a day.

Thanks for the thoughts. I get GSC's e-mail list every day, and they have some nice-looking coins every now and then, but I also notice a lot of hype and excitement over coins that don't necessarily warrant it (for instance, *any* Morgan dollar dated 1893, regardless of mintmark, is touted as the "KING of the series", when in fact, this is only true of the '93-S). They have had a number of Busties lately, but I agree that many of the pictures just don't look right sometimes.

I like the '29, but I can't tell what is going on just above the date. Is that a big nick, or just a spot?

While we're on the subject of opinions on dealers, I see some nice Busties from time to time from an eBayer known as "fairtraderz". I believe they have a brick-and-mortar presence in California, as well. Anyone have things to say - good/bad/otherwise - about that outfit?
