Many people know about the GSA hoard. Most people DO NOT know that the final coins of the hoard were not sold by the government until 1997. After the Majority of the GSA hoard was sold at auction through mail bid. The government was left with 321 silver dollars they considered culls. These coins were used in an exhibit at the mint and were sold off in 1997.

I purchased these 2 coin sets recently and they are 3 of the final 321 coins of the GSA hoard that was sold by the US Mint. The coins in them are very common and unimpressive... but these sets and their packaging are next to impossible to find.

    Enjoy!

I love the way you keep adding to my collection of very scarce pictures of numismatic items :thumb:

That reminds me, I still have about a million or so I need to send you :D

It's funny... they just happened to walk in the shop. I wasn't even looking for them.

No Rush, I know you are a busy feller.

That is way cool. Incredibly rare, based not on the coin, but the packaging! That is a great find!!!!

That's really neat. You sure do find some neat stuff.

By the way, why would they call them culls? They look great.

It's amazing. Back in 1997 when they sold them people who bought them were very upset and disappointed with them. now they are highly desired by those who know what they are.

I have to think that the 2 piece set is UBER rare... I've never seen another one.

I've seen a picture of another one but I agree it would probably be pretty rare. Probably determined by how many of the 321 coins were peace dollars.

What are you going to ask for them?

For the sake of research we called the US Mint Historian Maria Goodwin and inquired for any and all information they could find on the sale of these pieces. We spoke to Maria on the phone and while she had no recollection of the sets she is going to research them and call us back. We asked if she could find out how many of each set was issued and if she could find how they were marketed. Also on the off chance they had an inventory of the 321 coins... I also asked for that. I'll report when I hear back.

Government surplus in a box makes these rare?

Did the mint conduct a lottery for these or was it first come first served? Also what was the asking price for these (mint) one and two coin sets?

All wonderful questions. All of which we asked Maria Goodwin... hopefully she comes through with an answer.
