Depends on what you're roll searching for.
If you are your first go-through, you're sorting by decade and your eyes are like mine, 3x will do the job.
Later when you're looking for varieties, 7x-10x will be needed.

We use a loupe. 3-5X for grading or general identification. 7-10X for errors and varieties.

I used to use a loop, but I have since came across a 20X40 stereomicroscope. Lemme tell ya, I wouldn't go back to a loop willingly.

Stereomicroscope? I found mine in a storeroom that we were cleaning out at my University (Figured if they weren't using it then I would ).

Just did a quick search online, looks like you can find them starting in the $150 range.

If you mean a loupe ( magnifying lens) I suggest looking on Amazon for a Belomo brand loupe. They are different magnifications 7X to 20X, depending on what you decide. Some have them on ebay also.

Maybe in the strictest sense, but not really. We were cleaning out the store room and sending everything to surplus. It basically would have sat in a warehouse for another 10 years before being tossed out. There were about 15 of them, woulda been a shame for them all to go to waste. Besides, I've paid them 10's of thousands in tuition, and paid a buttload of parking tickets. I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it.

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin… For the sake of not high jacking this thread any more, I am just going to keep this short.
I will say, you are someone I would never want do business with; neither in numismatics or other areas. Based purely on the fact of how easily you justify stealing from someone who provides you with a service. You act as if they were in the wrong by charging you tuition in the first place. You should remember that YOU chose that school, if you thought the cost was too much, you could have picked a different school or not gone to begin with. Theft is theft, and you are a thief!

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin… For the sake of not high jacking this thread any more, I am just going to keep this short. I will say, you are someone I would never want do business with; neither in numismatics or other areas. Based purely on the fact that you think you can characterize me based on this little bit of information, and then try to take advantage of the opportunity to publicly scrutinize me. Do you feel propped up there Mr. Holier than Thou? Why don't you come down off your high horse and join the rest of us that are flawed enough to realize that moral characterization is not black and white in every situation.

I was donating my time to clean out that storage area because it was needed as office space for a new faculty member. There were 2 students there including myself, 1 staff member, and 2 faculty. The faculty member that originally purchased the stereoscopes was actually there, he said that they were no longer needed because they had since purchased some petroscopes. They all knew that I was taking the thing, we were all taking things that we felt could be of some use personally or within the department. We were sending the stuff to surplus, which essentially means that we were throwing it away. Did I feel like I was getting something for nothing? No, I had paid thousands in tuition, I had been awarded $150K in research grants (university gets 45%), and I was donating my time to clean the stinking room!

Of course, you did not have all of the information before jumping to your conclusion. But, how could I have known that I would be in danger of having my character attacked for failing to provide all of the information? I'm not dishonest, I am certainly not a thief, and I do not appreciate the accusation. Maybe you should try to not be so judgmental.

Point taken. If I had known all of that information I would not have said what I did. My apologies sir.

Now that is a stand-up way of going about things, apology accepted sir :smile.

I have to take some responsibility as well, I didn't put much effort into not misconstruing the story when originally telling it. I obviously jumped the gun with all that high horse and holier than thou yammering . Consider it officially withdrawn.

They're probably sitting in the surplus warehouse collecting dust with a million dollars worth of other useful stuff. Our tax dollars hard at work.

I would also like to withdraw my “I would never want to do business with you” statement. I am sincerely happy you accepted my apology. I should have known better than to jump to conclusions.
